Picked up a Stringray last night, way too hot!

Last night I got a Stringray clone and wrapped a dual twisted 28g to .4Ω on my Tobh atty. I'm using this in 18650 mode, where as my Nemesis I have always been using it in 18350 mode. (these are my first two mechs btw) I am keeping the Nemi right around 1Ω and am very happy with the vape, but the battery just doesn't last nearly as long as I would like. I was hoping to improve the vape and improve battery life by going with an 18650, but this is overboard! It is just too hot of a draw. I don't mind warm, but this is too warm.

Any suggestions of what build would be an improvement to vapor production over the 18350 Nemi, but not be so hot? Should I keep this around 1Ω as well? I'm not a cloud chaser, but obviously better production will in turn bring bigger clouds.

A hot vape is going to be more about air than the battery or mod. Make sure the coil is directly in the air flow and open it up.

You don't have to subohm to get the vape you want. I'm dripping around 0.5-0.8 and works fine for me and using around 1 ohm on my kayfuns.
When you're going lower it's more about the airflow like Verb said. And it's important that the airholes are lined up with the coils. If they're not you will have a harsh and possibly hot vape.

Try to build a dual 0.7-0.8 and see how you like that, that's one of my sweet spots for dripping atleast.
Unless you're going to cloudchase, then you'll have a hot vape either way. That's why people who cloudchase often drill out extra airholes to cool down the vape / coil even more.

And a side note, for lower ohms use safe batteries as sony vtc 4 or 5.

Yes airflow is key. I run my SS Stingray with the TOBH and Plumeveil at .20-.30 ohms all day. It gets a little warm but with airflow it helps cool it down.

This! Position the air intakes a close to the "sides" of the coil as possible and make sure there is and air gap under the coils IE; tamp down any wicking that may be in the way. I have my TOBH's built to 0.6 and 0.8. The 0.6 can get a little warm if I chain pull on it a wee bit too much.

you are probably just experiencing a lower voltage drop from the stingray vs. your other mech mod. chances are it's either brass or copper so it has better conductivity.

you could easily be experiencing less battery sag at 1Ω with an 18650 battery

you have 2 choices, really. you could let your battery run down to about 3.7 volts and keep it in that range, or just increase the resistance of your coil

I'm guessing airflow as well. I have 3 TOBHs, 2 built at .25 and one at .6 and none vape even overly warm so it's not likely the atty itself. If you're vaping at .4 consider using 26 gauge as well.

Lots of good points here! Thank you! And yes, I am using Sony VTC 4 batteries always! As for the air flow, I have the holes directly beside the coils. Using 28g, does anyone have a suggestion of coil set-up to get dual coils around 1Ω on this? I am of course limited on space for more wraps on both sides. I could always do single, but I really want dual. As I mentioned, I'm not looking to sub-ohm for the fact of sub-ohming, and I'm not cloud chasing. .4Ω is just where it happened to end up after the build. Exact matched coils of course.

I'm thinking of doing something like this to get more wraps on both sides. Thoughts, suggestions?

split the difference, run a 0.7ohm coil and see if you like that; if not run an 0.85ohm coil and try again; still no dice run you usual 1.0ohm coil.

As others have said a coil placed in the direct path of airflow will cool down some, plus larger air flow holes will alter your vape considerably.

Coupleother suggestions: (1) Get a Delrin or Pyrex drip tip. If you're using a stainless drip tip, it'll get hot fast! And (2) try to have your coils closer to the posts, then align the airflow right in front. By giving a little space from airflow to coil, you give the cool air being drawn in a chance to cool your coils.

Other than that, if it's still too warm for your taste, you may have to rebuild to a slightly higher resistance.

I will post a picture of the current build when I get home. (can't post from work PC) I do have the coils as close as possible to the posts, and the airholes are directly in front of them. As for larger holes, I am a bit concerned about trying to enlarge the holes on the Atty since the 3 holes are so close together. I may try to just drill out the center one a bit.

As for the resistance, I think I am going to go for around 1Ω or so.

Did you guys look at the picture I linked? I wonder if that will work well? Again, I am using 28g kanthal and of course more wraps are needed, and space is limited. Wondering if that will give me the resistance I need.
