Agree, I align the carts, of all my e-cigs, even on the M401. I think they all work better with that.
Still, It did not prevent the melting of the carts of the 510. I found another trick, to overcome this problem. I use a filling that combines teabag paper and fishtank filter material.
On the outsidea a tube of two layers of teabag paper, just cut slightly too long, so it will stick out about 1/2 millimeter over the cart end. In the middle I fill it up with the fibers. I use a toothpick to dig a little dimple in the center for the atty bridge. The effect of this mod, is to keep the border of the cart allways moist. The vapor production is slightly better too. Try it!
Happy vaping!

Better late than never. I read this thread before but never got out the magnifying glass to inspect inside the atty. Yes I need bright light and a magnifier for things like this. I always lined the flat on the tip so that the button on the batt was perpendicular. This way the first joint on my finger lined up with the button when I was holding the 510. I now line up my carts per Robert's description, it only makes sense. Still on my first atty so if I crushed the bridge or otherwise helped it towards it's demise, at least it's a lesson learned. Gotta learn how to hold the cig differently but that's small potatoes for atty health. Thanks Robert!

You Welcome, I can't understand why this isn't put in the instructions. And now that I'm using 5-6 volts, I know it's even more important.
