Please explain "dry burn"

I thought that if you use the atomizer without liquid on it, you will kill it? Now I see all these references to "dry burn" in regards to cleaning it. What am I missing? When I clean mine, I just blow out the water and put them in front of a fan for awhile, then drain overnight. Can a "dry burn" expedite the cleaning time?

Dry burning an atty is an excellent way to kill it. The trick is (in my opinion) to only do it as a last resort and not to over do it.
