one more thing, Chrome is the slowest of the major browsers, lagging .7 seconds on average (5.48secs) behind both IE and Firefox, which are both at 4.8 seconds.

thank you so much, sj;)
i've tried twice to get along with chrome on a certain person's recommendation and ended up uninstalling both times! :D

Not a problem - have to say that I'm pretty astounded by the difference. I wonder if it generalizes to other sites?

Thank you SJ for trying to help with this problem. Just for your info I just loaded the 2 high traffic threads I tried earlier today and it took 17 secs for one and 14 secs for the other to load. It is 4pm my time. By 7pm pages will load even slower. Just throwing that in. Fingers and toes are crossed that you can do something to at least cut those times in half. :)

""response on threads''
http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/outside/65725-response-threads.html

have you cleared your cookies, cache, temporary files, etc and closed out the browser like roly advised???? i do that once a month now and it does help.

I do that about once every week or two, doesn't everybody?
;)
Don't want to come across like a total grinch: I love the forum and appreciate the work mods and owners put into it!
Slow loading is a smallish price to pay, I guess.

OK folks we are just about to start a new programme of upgrades, this time focussed on page load speed. We might be able to get 25% off it so we're looking forward to seeing the results.

If you can write down what your current speeds are it will help us later on:
- Flush all browser data except passwords
- Close browser
- Open browser
- Go to ECF front page - time it for the main part of the page to open [not all the other stuff :) ]
- Then go to this thread and time how long it takes to open so you can see the top post
- Then go to a monster thread like the 'Response on threads' one where every ECF member has posted eight times a day for the past two years, and time that to the first post being visible please.

We'll do something every week for the next three or four weeks and see what the result is.

If anyone wants help speeding up their browser, PC or network I'm going to open a thread for that purpose.

OK, a quick update. We are looking into things because we do want all members to load pages in a reasonable time.

I will take a look at our analytics to see if there are any patterns of delays. Please do remember what Roly said upthread - this site is a forum and, as such, is incredibly demanding on server resources. It's really not fair to compare ECF with other websites, unless they are dedicated forums and have the same numbers of people online.

Furthermore, we've decided to upgrade our servers to the next level and also do some on-site optimizations (hence the disruptions you may have seen this evening). Not sure what the eta is on the server upgrade, but we'll keep you posted.

If you are getting consistent problems loading ECF pages, please will you check the contacts page to see how quickly that page loads - it's a good benchmark to see whether the problem is on our end or on yours.

SJ

The contacts page loads very quickly but majority of the other pages don't load for at least 8 seconds. 8 seconds doesn't seem like it should be the norm. I was trying to catch up tonight on my subscriptions but had to stop because the pages were loading so slowly. It's really frustrating. Thank you for looking into this problem
