Hi ezjetmarco and welcome to ECF!

Since they use vaporized PG (one of the ingredients in the juice we vaporize) in hospitals to reduce the risk of respiratory infections, I'd guess that the risk of pneumonia from vaping would be extremely small to non-existent.

A doctor might know more, but we're not doctors here and, for obvious reasons, don't give out medical advice.

Happy vaping!

pneumonia is caused by a bacteria ( pneumo coccus) ... if your system is weak from other reasons and the bacteria has a chance to settle into your system and you have adverse reactions from PG, then you might be more susceptible to it, but as far as vaping goes.... no it doesnt cause it to happen.... it would be like comparing an allergy to oranges causing sunburn...

I had some time off the last couple weeks and used a lot of the time to surf news and scholarly work related to ecigs. If there is hard evidence of ecigs causing illness nobody is claiming anything yet. How about this on the flip side. I have a 40 year old sports related over use injury invloving mild inflamation in a hip joint in specific ranges of motion and wasn't detectable in daily life. In the past 10 years I started to notice it walking. A few months ago long walks would be uncomfortable. It's been a couple months since I quit smoking and in that time I'd say the infamation in that hip has regressed 20 years. Not smoking will probably improve your immune and recuperative systems more than ecigs will lower them.

Hey mate!

There's no credibility to this, what's happened is that when ecigs were getting popular, people kept hearing "I'm just blowing out water vapor and humidifying the room." People started hearing water + lungs, and it started snowballing from there. Then a few docs equated glycerol. It's one of those things someone says that sounds like it could have truth to it to someone based on the little they know, so they adopt it and pass it on as fact when it's anything but.

Hi there fellow vapers!
So I started off a while ago, and I have heard about there being a suspected risk of pneumonia with using e-cigarettes. I am a bit skeptical about this, but I have had several sources telling me to cut it out.

What are your thoughts?

What do your sources say about CHANTIX ?

I'm with Jimi i haven't had any chest infection in 10 months but I have noticed my wheezing / hacking stopped and now can smell and taste like never before.....

Google lipoid pneumonia and e-cigs. My cousin told me about this so I read about it myself.

Well if you google enough you can find anything you want - it doesn't mean there is an element of truth to it. You get lipoid pneumonia from inhaling oil or petroleum based substances. And if you are vaping oil or petroleum based substances you are doing it wrong.

Hang on, you mean oranges cause sunburn??? and not the sun??????????? Frak, thought it was my 18 years of working nights and rarely seeing the sun that accounted for my burnt free skin hadn't even thought about not eating oranges in the same time frame as being a possible correlation. Never even considered the possible data convergence..?????

hmm, though does make kind of an odd logical conclusion.....Sunshine is a source of Vitamin C, Oranges are also a known source of the same, both the sun and oranges are of similar spherical geometries, both similarly pitted on the surface, both of similar visual concurrencies, and color variances, ...... damn, what was the question??? ???

It is possible that if a person has emphysema or Stage 4 COPD, then excessive vaping of some types of refill liquid (especially those without PG) may slightly increase the risk for transformation to (regular) pneumonia.

Risk for pneumonia is significantly elevated in patients with severely compromised lungs, which is why cases of pneumonia in such patients are not uncommon. Snus is a better choice of THR product for such patients.

As has been pointed out, it is currently regarded as impossible that inhalation of alcohols can cause lipoid pneumonia. There is no published study or even a single report demonstrating that alcohols are associated with paraffin lung. Glycol (PG) and glycerol are alcohols. Association with regular pneumonia in patients with severely compromised lungs is regarded as a possibility, but the lack of a significant number of possible cases despite an ecig userbase of at least 20 million users and a total user-year experience that must now considerably exceed 50 million user-years means that the risk is invisible even if present.

There is no reason why limited use by emphysema patients and similar of a high-PG refill liquid, under close supervision, should be contra-indicated; though Snus is a better choice for such persons, mostly due to the difficulty of imposing the required safeguards on persons with advanced lung disease.
