Portable Charger

Now im sure their are alot of people out their that do not have a bounty of batts at their disposal, and when when ur up sh** creek without a batt and you wish you did, their is a pretty cool alternative.

If you dont have a PCC, a portable charger would be supurb...right?

Ada Fruit Industries sells a $20 portable power kit with a USB connection encased in an Altoids case here. I have had one of these things for about 2 years and it has saved me countless of times from dead battery treachery.

The best part is that it runs on AA's (sold everywhere) and it can charge your phone and ipod too!

Has anyone else used something like this and what are your thoughts??

On an eGo style battery it should work fine, expect about the same charging times. On regular 510 batteries, the output is too powerful and will damage the battery.

The USB charger that comes with your e-Cig steps down the amps to whatever your e-Cig needs. So there should be no problem using this charger with a 510 batteries.

My PCC is a tad bigger...

I have been using it for about 6 months on both 510 and eGo batteries with no problems.

Then why does JoyE say not to use the eGo charger (500mA) on a reg 510 battery? It is charging too fast. 510 chargers are 200mA more than enough to charge the 180mAh and 220mAh batts.

It is also why they do not recommend to charge a battery (10440) using a high rate charger.

Anyway folks are indeed welcome to do whatever they do.

I didn’t say to use an eGo charger on a 510 battery. That WILL damage a 510 battery.

What I said was it is OK to use a USB power source that is greater than the mAh output of the charger. The charger “that comes with your e-Cig” will step the amps down to the required amps that are safe to use for the intended battery.

It wont damage your battery, i know this since a standard all usb ports provide 500-900mA of current.

Switched you are reading the charger specs wrong, that means it draws 200mA, its not an amp rating.

My thoughts are nice idea, I just ordered\bought one. Did you have any trouble with assembly?

The only problem i had when assembling was getting the little AA battery holder in the Altoids tin. It's a real tight fit so be careful not to crack the battery holder (i broke the last two). the PCB is pretty small so soldering can be a little tricky for newbies. To be sure that it closes properly make sure that you cut down far enough to fit the usb port. The first one i built wouldn't close all of the way so i used a dremel to help the usb port fit better.

I can't forget this, when your fitting everything into the tin, i found that the underside of the PCB can short on the metal tin. I used a thin layer of epoxy to prevent this and after 2 years i haven't had any problems with it.

I put mine together yesterday and although I agree it's great in a pinch(especially if you have a large supply of AA batteries as I do) it takes several hours to charge my ego 650mah batteries. Works great on my mini cig.
Thank you for the suggestion. I had fun putting it together and im sure it will come in handy.

edit: i will be going to radio shack in search for a 3 or 4 battery container that will fit into the large size altoids tin box. should make things easier.
