Portable USB Chargers and VV/VW Mods

Hello all,

Is it safe to use a portable USB charger to charge an APV or possibly even attach and use as a passthrough while charging?
What specs would the charger need to achieve this safely.

I am looking at this device (link below) in particular to charge a DNA30 mod usings a sony VTC 5 (2600Mah)

Yes, it is safe. The device you are charging 'decides' how much current it needs to safely charge. External battery packs are actually safer than plugging something into an outlet, because they deliver constant power, rather than be subject to over or under current...

I believe so . Circuitry is separate, you'll be vaping from your sony only so it'll need some charge first.

The power balances tho- if there is 2000mah in the backup charger, you'll only receive 1000mah in your dna.

Yes, it is safe. The device you are charging 'decides' how much current it needs to safely charge. External battery packs are actually safer than plugging something into an outlet, because they deliver constant power, rather than be subject to over or under current...

That makes sense, I tend to use a USB attached to my PC or if I tend to follow the rule that the [output current of the charger] < [battery mah], e.g. If its a 1600Mah battery, I'll use a 1.5AMP Charger

I'm not sure I understand what you mean there. Are you saying that if I purcahse that 5200Mah Portable charger, I will only be able to 'fully charge' my 2600Mah Battery Once (5200/2 = 2600)?

It has an output of 5V and 3Amps, would this be unsafe to use since the battery is 2600Mah?

The charging currents appear fine but unless the Bean or the DNA have an in-built charge controller to terminate the charge at an absolute maximum of 4.2v then it is unsafe to use. Personally, I don't see the point in spending £23 on such an unquantified device that can only charge one battery at a time, when you can buy a specific Lithium-ion charger such as an Intellicharger i4 for just over £13 and still have enough to buy a decent cellphone charger. I also expect the Bean to take aeons to fully charge a VTC from scratch, if in fact it's able to do so. I can see it may have possibilities if you were off camping in the mountains for a long weekend and used it as an emergency back-up but I wouldn't use it as a constant source of supply, if it were me.

I have a discount code for the Bean for £12, the other one I posted has a 1300Mah capacity and 2 outputs for £30 which would be excellent for when I travel.

My DNA30 Mod is the ProtoVapor XPV which has wires soldered to the battery so it is not removable without a fair amount of work (i.e at end-of-life). I own an Intellicharger i2 to charge my the batteries I use on my Mech. I wanted a portable charger so I can charge (and use via passthrough) when I'm not home.

I'm pretty sure the DNA30 cuts off charge when it hits ~4.2 volts as it uses the Evolv USB chip, correct me if I'm wrong though

Possibility?; Both Intellichargers have a 12v port, so if you're away in your car you could run a 2-pin lead direct from the car battery and have it terminate in the glovebox out of view to passing scrotes.

Sounds like a good idea but I live in London so I tend to travel mainly by bus (takes 6 hours to get home!) and sometimes train, its rare i'm in a car these days

Haha, Take the London-Cardiff National express which takes about 4 hours, then I take a train from cardiiff to my home in the valleys which takes an hour, then its a 20 min bus from there to my Village, takes about 6Hrs with wait time, luckily I can stealth vape using a high pg mix at the back of the bus

Haha I'm actually on Placement here as part of my university course, doing programming for an Insurance Company. The jobs decent, but I currently live around Whitechapel which is dump to put it lightly.

Moving to Cardiff in the fall though so not too long left here!
