Where do you get micro coils and cotton balls at?? There are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO many threads on rebuilding, I'm completely confused....
organic cotton balls from walgreens
30g kanthal a-1 wire from tempco
then just watch a video on how to wrap it, there are tons of them, if you need help msg me and i can explain it more.

I just got:
Aga-T
VH-Vivi
teeny little dripper rebuildable (I think it's an Ego Esolid)

am getting (hopefully Tues or Weds):
Kayfun 3.1
Steam Turbine
Ithaka
Era Hornet

I have 32 gauge Kanthal wire and silicone wick (6') that I bought on Ebay

I figured I could use the above for that, but I picked up a roll of 100% natural fiber twisted cotton twine (3lb) that I was going to try after boiling. I got this because it LOOKS organic, complete with little bits of cotton hulls and it's not bleached white (it's the color of fresh picked cotton). And it's so cheap, why would anyone bother adding synthetic to it... it's one of those super old twine brands that are like Kiwi shoe polish, been making the stuff for 100 years, and wouldn't change.

I thought I could use the above for everything... should I get micro coils and cotton balls too, or something else? And... I can build them all the same way right? You just cut a piece of wire to the ohm you want, wrap it however many times around the wick til it fits in the opening, and wrap other end around the post (making sure coils don't touch each other anywhere and are the same size)? Do different RBA change the way you build them?

I didn't have any RBA so thought I'd try a few different ones to see which looked better...

While I'm asking, I saw that some people used metal poles instead of wicks, I think that's steel mesh, but haven't found where the info for those are yet (spend too much time on this forum talking about kittens, pupplies and decorations:)).

I would appreciate being steered in the right direction:)!!

It's a lot easier to show you how to do micro coils and thread your cotton than explaining, so here are a couple of videos for you to watch.

This is on the Ithaka
A PBusardo Review - The Ithaka - YouTube

This one is on the Russian, but it's pretty much the same as the 3.1 you're getting
A PBusardo Review - The Russian - YouTube

Also I would highly recommend either 30ga or 28ga kanthal for your micro coils instead of 32.

I know the Ithaka is really complex... I picked the RBA/RDA on a range basis... easiest to hardest, so I could see what the difference was by comparing them to each other. I'm not sure I'm going to end up having this much patience tho... urm.

Anyway, I'll ask more questions when I find the right forum here to ask them at. Thanks for the heads up!!!

I've got a n00bie micro coil question (since we are on the off-topic): do I have to heat them or can I just squeeze them super tight with a pliers?

You'll need to heat the wire. I usually heat the wire before I start my wraps as this takes some of the springiness out of the kanthal. Most of my coils are wrapped using a 5/64th drill bit and after I finish wrapping, I use a pair of tweezers and squeeze the coil together and then heat it until it glows with a propane torch (butane torch works as well). You may also have to tidy up the coil a little bit after you secure the two leads.

I don't have a torch (yet). I presume that an unheated coil will still work, but perhaps not as well?

Edited to add: I am (intending to) use Kanthal Ready Wires from Stormy's and organic cotton.

Those are NR/R/NR wires. Is this coil for something like a Sophia or Diver?

Yes - for the Sophia.

Ah ok. The principle is still the same regardless. If you don't have a torch (if you want to continue to build micros, I do recommend getting at least a butane torch), there is another way to heat your coil and form it. Wrap your coil as tightly as you can and once you have the leads secured, you can pulse the coil until it glows. After you let off the switch, use the tweezers to squeeze the coil together. You may have to do it a few times, but you will get at least a passable micro out of it.

I got a Diver in the Classifieds too last week, and I think I'm going to resell it, because it too uses a non and charged wire, and after watching the pbusardo video, I have NO idea how to do what I watched him do (touch 2 wires together and they just stuck. huh?

He used a wire welder. Made for joining those wires. You can just twist them together or buy ready mades.

.....I got this because it LOOKS organic, complete with little bits of cotton hulls.......

Well that doesn't sound good.

Imagine the taste of a hot coil wrap frying a hull.

I'd stick to Silica and/or get a bag of organic cotton balls from Walgreens. One 80-100 count $3.99 bag should last about 5 decades.
