I do a really good hot water rinse for about ten to twenty seconds and then just dry burn until it stops smoking on me and have been using the same coil I built last Saturday since. I have a few juices that gunk it up pretty good and this method cleans them spotless for me and yes taking the time to blow the ashen gunk off really helps, not just to remove the gunk but also to add a little cooling to the wick and wire between burns. Just remember to only burn until you see a glow then let it off, otherwise you will run a much greater risk of popping the coil and then you have to start all over again with a new one.
Hope this helps a bit;
