Sorry I can't address the prepaid CC thing but just wanted to recommend checking the vendor negative review section here, as well as a quick (their name)+rating google search of them before ordering which sometimes turns up. I've dealt with a lot of vendors and haven't found any, in my experience, to be untrustworthy, yet.

Something to keep in mind, it's not just the vendors you should worry about. There are a bazillion and a half ways (ok, maybe a slight exaggeration) for a 3rd party to get your info.

I received a $50 vanilla mastercard last christmas. Used it for my china purchase, they do not charge any transaction fee. The card can not be reloaded so once you're out of money, you can simply just toss it away. You can even log into their website to check your balance. No personal information is entered except for entering your zip code in their online activation process. I have also heard of a "virtual credit card" where you can load it up with money to use online, i have not done this myself so my knowledge is nill but maybe its something you can look into.
