So I picked up some efest purples, have some Samsung R25s on the way and my Intellicharger i4 should be delivered tomorrow (all in readiness for my sigelei 100w plus from fasttech)

Am I right in thinking that my new batteries will need to be charged before use?

I only ask this as I remember the days of mobile phones needing to be charged before you could use them for the first time, but now they're good out of the box.

Sorry for the most basic of questions.

All the above. Most do come with at least a partial charge, so if you're in a real hurry you can use them. But, of course, they won't last a long time before needing to be charged.

And it won't hurt them to use them that way. Just that the initial use might be less time than if you charge them first. Lithiums don't have the "memory" effect of Ni-cads.

Woah woah! Nobody's mentioning the fact that these batteries, going in a dual-18650 box mod, need to be married!

When you get the batteries, there's no telling whether the nominal voltages will be the same thing (unless you check yourself). You're gonna want to fully charge these batteries before you use them, and from then on, you need to maintain the same charge cycles on these two batteries. They need to be "married" and permanently paired, you can't single one out for some 18650 mech time and then throw it back in the box with its spouse. Keep 'em together.

While there haven't been any incidents of issue from not being thorough about married batteries, I say, why risk it? Just keep note of which one is "1" and which is "2", and make sure you charge them the same # of times, and you'll be keeping any risks of violent battery discharge to a minimum.
