I think the real crime here is that people think Beneful is actually a healthy dog food

"Ground yellow corn, chicken by-product meal, corn gluten meal, whole wheat flour, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols, rice flour, beef, soy flour, meat and bone meal, propylene glycol, sugar, tricalcium phosphate, salt, phosphoric acid, potassium chloride, animal digest, sorbic acid (a preservative), mono and dicalcium phosphate, dried spinach, dried peas, dried carrots, L-Lysine monohydrochloride, calcium propionate (a preservative), choline chloride, zinc sulfate, Vitamin E supplement, ferrous sulfate, manganese sulfate, Red 40, niacin, Vitamin A supplement, Yellow 6, Yellow 5, copper sulfate, Vitamin B-12 supplement, calcium pantothenate, Blue 2, thiamine mononitrate, garlic oil, pyridoxine hydrochloride, riboflavin supplement, Vitamin D-3 supplement, calcium iodate, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), folic acid, biotin, sodium selenite."

Interesting and useful link, DrMA. I have two cats. I also want to note that cats are vulnerable to ash content in food, which is another reason they should not eat dog food. Whatever ash content is, it's hard on their urinary systems.

Ash content is basically calcium-containing inorganic material ("minerals"). The closest equivalent I can think of is the quantity known as "hardness" for drinking water.

High ash content can indeed cause kidney stones and other problems in cats, that's why you should feed your cats food that has the lowest ash content possible.

I worked at a specialty pet supply store for 5 years and yes Beneful is one of the junkiest foods one can feed their dog but in all that time I never heard about one case of a dog dying from eating it, or even getting sick. Heck our general manager fed his dog Beneful, cause he is a cheapskate, and his dog lived till old age. Strange because the pet food industry is actually very recall happy and we had many many recalls during my five years there but Beneful was never one of them. Pet food manufacturers are famous for changing their formulas though so maybe....and we are talking Purina, who knows if they're using food grade PG.

That sucks.

I think if you're a responsible pet owner, you shouldn't go cheap and feed them junk food. Some owners see them as family members, or even children... so why feed junk to them? Fork up a bit more and get them the more natural/meat (as the first ingredient) type of foods like Nutro, Blue, or even Kirkland (Costco) if you want to save some cash.

PG is indeed poisonous to cats, but not dogs
Propylene Glycol and cats - why is it bad?

I read thru the article which talks about the dangers of cats ingesting pg. But, now my concern is, are there any dangers to cats being around our vapor with the pg? I have been vaping for close to 6 years and have had my cat that entire time. I haven't noticed any changes in her health since I switched from smoking to vaping? When I did smoke I always went outside away from her. Now I am really worried that my vaping my be hurting her in the long term? Anyone have any more information about this topic?

for a little historical perspective,50 years ago the majority
of pets never even visited a vet until maybe they were near
death anyway.
due to the near pervasive regulations in place now concerning
registration and vaccinations the majority of pets now see
a vet on a regular basis.
back in the day life expectancy of of most dogs was ten years
maybe a little more. cats slightly longer. now days its common
for dogs to live healthy past 15 years and cats into their twenties.
back then unless you were a farmer the general population didn't
know much about the health and proper care of their pets.
if Fido got sick he either got well or died. such is life.
today the advancements in health care and nutritional needs
of our pets has advanced and is evident in that a lot of our
pets are living longer and developing illnesses that become
more evident at an older age.
