Stage 2 Review of OEM Protank 2 - Rebuilding The Coil
I heard so much stories of users switch from top coil to Protank saying how it sucks etc. Now I know why.
I forgot to add that that using the stock coil previously, the nice flavour vape can only be achieved at low voltage of abt 3.2V at 5.2W but it started to give a burnt taste whenever I increase beyond 6W, which is unacceptable.
Later I found out the stock coil simply sucks. Even though its 2.5ohms, its not the same as a Vivi 2.4ohm coil quality.
Reason being, to save costs, just like with many stock coils, it uses minimal materials:
- super thin wires(34-36awg?) and
- what looks like giamchisai <1mm thin silica wrap with tiny coil
- and another tiny strand placed on top.
End Result: Burnt Taste, no wonder so many complaints, can see some smashed glass tanks, cuz its a waste for such a beautiful device not to vape well, LOL.
Remedy Using Aftermarket Replacement Heads
My first try yields success. I used a coil rated at 1.8ohm (tested at 2.1ohm) immediately shows a great difference, the great flavour sustained all the way beyond 7.5W. But its really depends on luck and defect rate. Not sure what materials was used and not wanting to have that burnt taste again, I proceed straight away to build my own coil using tried and tested material-setup.
Remedy with Coil Rebuild
Using my fav all-rounder 30awg nichrome wire with 8 micro wraps yielding 1.7ohms and 3mm high-grade silica.
When pluck in, OMG Mama Mia, Total Heaven.
I hoot the Evic all the way til 10W @ 4.12V to simulate my Mechanical mod and gives still gives the smoothest vape ever without burnt taste with greater amount of vapour just like my RDA.
Whereas for VivNova, regardless of whether 1.8/2.4/2.8ohms, once it gets past 8W (depending on juice type), its a goner, the burnt taste start coming simply because the juice is unable to keep up to the heat. Even if you tilt here and there, also can't work, overfill to try to simulate BCC, worse stil, flood, can't wick properly, so its more of design issue.
This is the inherent weakness with Top coil clearomisers since it was Not design to be 'flooded', it will never outperform BCC and RBA/RDA.
(Btw, contrary to popular users review whom prefers Kanthal over Nichrome, I prefer my 30awg nichrome over my 32 awg Kanthal A1 anytime. At least for my case, the Kanthal seems to keep giving more metallic taste whereas the nichrome retains the flavour much better with minimal/non-existent metal taste. Best part, this nichrome is bought from Sim Lim Tower, LOL, so it could be 60 or 80 its not stated but it rocks.)
Interim Conclusion
Brief SWOT Analysis
Main Strengths
The Protank 2 BCC design when used with proper coil set-up, esp a good rebuild, gives the edge over typical Vivi top coil design by retaining its flavour more consistently at higher wattage, because its stay wet all the time with right amount of juice flowing nice tasty vape. Another advantage is that this means it is more
versatile and can be used on any Ego battery, whether fixed 3.7V, those with 3.2/3/8/4/2 and mechanical mods with higher voltages.
Main Weakness
Many users complaint about burnt taste (one reason as highlighted above). Some reported coil flooding after a few days. But at least not for my case after rebuild. Hence it is attributed to coil type/setup. Will of course, need more tests over longer periods to evaluate its real performance.
However, rebuilding the coil of the Protank 2 shows some design weakness whereby you need some brute strength to 'yank' out the metal shaft before you can get to the coil itself and need same brute strength to hammer it in, LOL, certainly not as user friendly as rebuilding a standard Vivi Nova.
Threats
The force of threats from other Clearomisers seems weak, at least not from Top coils.
The newer design - BDC, Protank 3 vs Aspire BDC (bottom dual coil) gave mixed extreme results, with some giving very bad rating - poor taste etc. The aspire cartridge design is extremely cumbersome and expensive to replace.

Vs The Dbox Puritank - Irony is, reportedly it came out before Protank 2, supposed to be 'Protank' killer. But its tank is non-removable, whereas Protank 2 can be fully disassembled which aids cleaning.(

On the other hand, flavour/vapour production for Protank 2 is excellent to me at can be seen is largely dependent on how the coil was rebuild, materials and ohms rating, hence any newer products comparison claiming to have 'better' flavour/vapour should be taken with a pinch of salt.
Opportunities
The real Protank 2 threat might come from within Protank itself, doesn't seem to come from Protank 3 for time being as its costly to replace DC heads and impossible to rebuild (

A breakthrough in innovation is needed to improve on all factors such as ease of use/rebuild/replacement and reliability across various devices at low maintenance costs.
