I just took my protank apart and ontop of the coil there is a extra wick strands just sitting there. Is there a purpose to this little piece of wick they added and do I need it?. Would I notice if I removed it, cause I thought in theory that there should be no silica wick touching the coil and this little extra piece sits right ontop the coil.

there's a couple things that extra wick could be doing. one is to control the flow of fluid to the coil, the other is to help prevent flooding (which would also prevent leaking out the bottom).

as for "should be no silica wick touching the coil" ... that's not the case. if you look, there's a wick running right through the coil. this is how most atomizers work. Silica is a very high temperature material, far higher than the temperatures we're dealing with.

but to answer if it's needed. there are a few answers to that, but in my experience, thicker liquids, like ones heavy in PG, tend to flow slowly to the coil, so I remove a couple of the wicks. with the thinner materials, I either take it or leave it (or sometimes add some back).

Well...I removed it and all I hear is gurgling and little to no vape. I put the origional "flavor wick" back I took out and still I have almost no vape. I replaced it with a new different flavor wick and still get no vape. I got fed up with the whole thing and replaced it with the spare wick the tank came with and now it works like a champ. I dunno ... I did but the 1.8 coil doesn't work properly no more and the new 2.4 works great. I will bang my head into the wall a bit later trying to figure what happened tp the 1.8 wick.

You did not blow out all the excess juice in the pipe from FLOODING
You really need to read, learn, test properly. Youtube can be an asset

Silica touching the coil?........had to laugh.........The coil is wrapped around silica
Silica is good to over 2000 degrees, why hotter than you will ever vape..(I hope)
For very thin juices a 3rd wick could be necessary.
For very thick juices - mostly VG - one wick MAY need to be removed.............After testing.
