Pub Licensing body to ban e cigarettes!!

I just saw a friend of mine who watches alot of TV. She was watching the program "This Morning" and they were discussing the e-cigs apparantly. Also, she said they had the Pub, club etc chief of licensing on and he was saying that they are banning the use of the e-cigs in ALL pubs and clubs etc because of the impression they will create. Anyone caught using one will be asked to either "put it out" or leave the premises and if they argue the fact it's not a cigarette, the police will be called to escort them off the premises.

Now, I for one actually welcomed the smoking ban because it meant that I would smoke less on a night out and therefore it would benefit me. However, I am appaulled that those of us trying to quit or just comply with the law by using an e-cig instead are clearly being discriminated against, I think it is bang out of order.

They banned smoking, why not ban alcohol, it is just as harmful. They sell non alcoholic drinks in pubs etc so why not allow non tobacco products to be "smoked". A person smoking a cigarette or e-cig is not likely to lose control of ones self or cause harm to others. A person drinking alcohol can become incredibly stupid, irresponsible and downright nasty and a danger to the public. Where's the justice I ask!!

I would be interested to hear what other people think of this. I haven't actually seen the program myself but if anyone has, it would be interesting to know if my friend got her facts completely right or not.

See, this is why I want more people to know about these things; it's alot easier for this guy to do this when the vast majority of the public don't know anything about it, and hence don't care.

I have to agree about alcohol. Obviously cigarettes are not victim less. But no matter how much one smokes ones judgment is not impaired.

wasnt smoking banned because of secondary smoke issues?there are no such issues with vaping-so what is the problem?it was only a matter of time before this happened-compromise is a dirty word to these people.its the whole "nanny state" thing again.we are not hurting anyone around us by e-smoking,so a blanket ban because of "the impression they will create" is ridiculous and quite frankly i find it offensive...but sadly typical of our society today...by the way,ive never seen anyone get aggressive,vandalize property or run someone over in a car because of smoking a pack of cigarettes(never mind just vaping!)-unlike excessive drinking--they should be concentrating on curtailing the binge drinking culture in our country-which causes us a fortune as our taxes are used to clear up the mess that it creates,the social and economic ramifications are huge.what is "the impression" THAT creates?!but then of course the bar trade arent making any money from e-smoking,so what do they care..of course im not saying that drinking should be banned,but they should realise that e-smoking is the least of their worries,and is actually harmless to others-in fact if they embraced it it might even encourage people to go to the pub more often,as since the smoking ban their trade has suffered on the whole!still,instead of them researching it properly and looking at other options-just ban it!!i fear once government really becomes aware of e-smoking-when it becomes more mainstream-it will either be taxed out of existence or banned--ok,its better for your health-but so what?THEY know whats best for us,apparently!!its draconian but oh so typical.

I'm afraid I don't know any more than what I have written, have looked to try and find more information but to no avail. I may email the TV studios to see if they can shed some more light on it.

I know this is an older post but the use of e-cigs CANNOT be banned by the so-called "Chief of Licensing" (for a start local councils have their own Licensing Departments and heads, hence the variance from one council to another) plus it would also have to be passed by Parliament and made law which, at the present time it has not. I think if e-cigs were more popular and the government and it's cohorts tried to ban them, after the disastrous downturn in the hospitality trade where thousands have lost their livelihoods already and many more to follow, I think there would be such an outcry that any attempt to ban e-cigs would be unsuccessful. Not only that, this government has 18 months or less to run so legislation would probably not happen before the next general election.

Furthermore, e-cigs DO NOT come under the smoking ban law which quite clearly states anything using tobacco (there is no tobacco in an e-cig) or lit (nothing is lit in an e-cig) so this Chief of Licensing was wrong in what he said. Also because e-cigs do not come under the SBE law it is highly unlikely the police would become involved unless the person concerned became abusive.

However, it is only polite and good manners to ask the publican if it's alright to puff on your e-cig. If he/she says "No" then just tell them you'll take your trade elsewhere to another establishment. Preferably when you've got a dozen or so friends with you. It's amazing how loss of profit can change someone's mind

Hazi, I hate to say this but you really only have yourself to blame (and others with the attitude that they haven't got the willpower to stop smoking themselves and wanted the SBE law brought in to force other people to help you stop, regardless of whether that people enjoyed smoking and didn't want to stop themselves). Unfortunately, you've just found out that the anti-smoking zealots, and indeed the whole anti-anything brigade will just carry on banning whatever it is they don't like.

Absolutely right, LP, but issues like this that are self-regulated by the industry will be decided upon by people like the Chief of Licensing, who may well make things up as they go along, but will be listened to by those in the industry.
