Hey folks. I have had Bulli rebuildable atomisers for around 10 months now and just love them. Rebuilding is easy for the most part. Sometimes I found getting the wicking going right not always a hit the first round and some fiddling is required.
Anyway, I got to thinking about wicking alternatives and could really only find ss mess being used. But there are very expensive ceramic wick and reservoir units around. Saw a bar of Pumice stone in a dollar store so I picked it up because of the fine sponge look it had. I googled for the make up and seems it's pretty much common type of lava rock.

At this point if anyone has any information on any unforeseen harmful effects of using this for this application, please voice concern.

So I started to experiment with it. First off, no problem with the heat causing any visible vapor or smell.
I curved out a cylinder piece about 1/8" in diameter. Working with this is very delicate as will crumble and chip easily. I used a nail file and very little pressure. Actually gets quite easy once you screw up a couple and catch on to the proper pressure to sand at.

Used a hack saw to slice a 1/2" slice off the stone to start, then a pair of side cutters to get to size that sanding can begin. This will be fairly larger then needed as using the side cutters is pretty crude. But have lots to try again.

I used Kanthal AWG 32 to wire a 2 ohm coil. I have been dressing my coil ends for a while now as make for placement under the screw easier. I use connector pins which are made of gold plated nickel. I only use the end portion which I crimp the wire into.

I had mounded vertically such that the winding was sitting directly under the feed hole from the center portion of the Bulli. Now I inserted the Pumice into the coil. The idea is such that it is a very tight fit and I actually had to screw it into the coil to get it to go down. The height adjustment is the important part here. Started a bit long and kept wisping away at it with the nail file little at a time till I could screw down the mid section and it would just touch as the threat would stop.

This is right after stalling the pumice and adjusted the height.

Primed and ready to teat.

Giving it a first test.

After using for a few minutes I opened to inspect and found some juice building up around the screws. Then I saw that some Pumice was touching at one spot. Did a little fine adjustment and so far has stayed dry on the screws.

What is really cool with this is the fact that you need no delivery wick from the top. The mid section tube is left hollow and so far seems to be working well.
Also have had no break-in bad taste.

Funny, was just going to inquire about the safety of Pumice but figured I would pass on why I'm asking as well and it led to this.
I sure hope it's safe as I is working awesome so far.

Thanks guys. Makes me feel better. I have found that the feed to the wick needs some further work. Finding I have to give a downwards nudge (bump the handle) every few pulls as starts to go dry. I think what's happening is the top of the pumice is changing position ever so slightly.
Going to play some more as the taste is well worth it if the juice delivery can be accomplished better.

Yep. Seems like the last too possibilities for a magic bullet wick are porous ceramic rods and lava rock. Pretty cool that both came up in the forum at about the same time.

Problem is they both suffer from the same potential issue, e.g. liberation of silica/ceramic/crystalline X in the vapor stream, which raises concerns of potential pulmonary insult, toxicity and chronic pathologic changes. Hopefully someone will be able to prove that this isn't happening.

Still great thread, hope this works out!
