After trying a half dozen tobacco flavors, I don't like any flavor that I can vape in the morning where its taste and/or aftertaste hasn't grossed me out. So I'm curious about the most healthful and easy way I wold create my own juice from flavorless and extracting minimal tobacco flavor from a real cigarette.

Thanks,
Dave

When it comes to extracting the nicotine from tobacco, you are going to need to identify how much nicotine you have extracted. It appears we have a chemist amongst us who has proposed a fairly accurate method for doing this at home without spending thousands to have the liquids sent off and tested. See the thread here

Any interest in determining nicotine?

That being said, there are some folks who have purchased organic tobacco and soaked it in PG/VG/Alcohol and other methods to extract the nicotine, and it does appear to work. The problem and question again, which is "how much nicotine?". I would highly advise to use caution when doing this, one person reported having some problems that almost warrented a call to the emergency room, likely due to a very high strength extraction.

For a more controlled result, you can try extracting the nicotine from Snus pouches, as they have a measured nicotine content and don't contain nearly as many additives as traditional cigarette tobacco does.

I guess I wasn't clear enough. What I'm curious about is a way to just extract the flavor from the real tobacco--hopefully with as little nicotine as possible. The nicotine in my brew would primarily come from the flavorless eliquid. So as you suggested, I would roughly know the concentration of nicotine.

Thanks for your helpful response, though.

I'd also be interested in this. I'm currently mixing low and 0-nic liquids for a 5.5mg strength, but I want as much flavor as possible. I've been tempted to try making some using various pipe tobaccos, but I'm wary of getting too much nicotine.

I also plan to try the tobacco flavorings available at LiquiXpress. Web site is down or I'd post links.

Count me in on the interested in anything related to DIY nicotine extraction or strength determinations...

You see, before I discovered e-cigs I decided to just grow my own...

My crop of Burley tobacco is currently Mature and ready for harvest...

Really should do something with it I guess?

Post away,

You have my full attention

and THANKS

Extracting flavor from tobacco without the nicotine doesn't sound like it would be possible, at least not easily. I plan to buy some tobacco absolute to use to flavor my stash of flavorless nic juice. It's available at several websites. It's expensive, but as I understand it you only use a tiny amount (1 ml or so) to mix up a tincture with Everclear or vodka. You then use the tincture to flavor the nic juice. You will probably also want to use some other flavorings along with the tobacco absolute. There are a number of recipes in this very forum that use it. I believe there is at least one type of tobacco absolute that contains a substantial amount of nicotine, but most do not have enough nic to be measurable at low concentrations.

I have a few of the LiquidXpress flavors, but I'm not impressed. They are not concentrated so you have to use a lot of the flavor liquid and they still seem weak to me. I tried the Original and 555 tobacco flavors so far. The 555 has the right flavor, but is weak tasting to me. The Original flavor might as well be pure flavorless PG for all I can tell. I also have the Mr. Bean (coffee) and Taboo (RY4) flavors but I haven't got around to trying them yet.

Actually, the flavor of tobacco relative to the nicotine content is high versus low. To look at it another way, one gram of tobacco soaked in 10 mL of propylene glycol will reek of tobacco, while only containing (assuming the nicotine fully extracts) 1 mg/mL of nicotine. Thus the nicotine contribution to the final e-liquid from the tobacco will be negligible compared to the nicotine added to the e-liquid from the PG/nicotine concentrate.

You may be right, but the thing that worries me is there's just no way to know for sure how much nicotine you're getting. You're assuming 10mg nicotine in 1 gram of tobacco. That is a widely published figure for US cigarette tobacco, but it's only an average, and some tobacco has quite a bit more nicotine than that. Even if the nicotine content in your extract IS negligible, there will be quite a few other undesirable things in that extract. Especially if you use factory cigarette tobacco with all the nasty junk they add to it. Others may disagree, but I'd still rather use the tobacco absolute. That's what Johnson Creek was using until recently and I believe it's also what the Chinese e-liquid makers use for tobacco flavor.

Had a lengthy conversation with the owner of a cigar shop here in town. Nice guy. One thing that came out in this talk surprised me. He said the nic content of cigar tobacco is much lower than cigarettes. The curing process involves heat and the nic is pretty much neutralized. Longer the stuff is cured, lower the nic content.

I had never heard that before.... figured to throw it out to ya'll to chew on if you want.

I concur- The Original had virtually no flavor and the 555 had a hint of flavor, AT BEST. I was terribly dissapointed.

Although they remind us on the site that these are NOT concentrates I was certainly expecting a little more. In fact, I was expecting a lot more. Might as well had been unflavored.

I chalked it up to an expensive lesson learned :-|

Generic,

Sorry you didn't like the flavors, some people swear by them, others don't taste them, I guess it's chalked up to personal taste. Thanks for pointing out that they are not suppose to be concentrated like lorann's. Our site does say it, most people say they can use 25%-40% to get the amount of flavoring they like, which is still doubling the amounts of liquid for the price vs. pre-mixed liquids.

My latest preference is light cig flavor in the morning, reg cig flavor in the afternoon (perhaps with some vanilla), and strong cigar flavor in the evening.

It sure costs a lot of money to remain open minded with this ecig business :) I'm trying RY4 again, as I think with my first try I got it on the cheap and it was crap. This may be my last attempt at any flavor other than tobacco.

And oh what the h-ll. Maybe all tobacco flavors should have tobacco extract in them. As long as I can breathe better than I can will analogs.

:) Dave
