It can be done with the right talent. I think Skeet gave good advice on the primer. I also think a good quality acrylic sealer, or clear coat is a must. But idealy this should be done before the mod is built, without the two switches, and atty connector in place.
The reason I dont do it, is it is quite a bit of labor because so many coats are involved, and they really look like .... if you rush it. The ideal thing would be for me to paint quite a few in the same color, and then offer them up for sale. I will give that some deep thought. Custom work is difficult. It takes me 3 times as long to build one mod by itself.

Krylon advertises a spray paint for plastic patio furniture that doesn't need a base coat. Masking could be a problem, however it won't cost much to replace it if you goof it up. Maybe melting wax on the on/off button and carto connector. Then finding a plastic cap that would fit over the button. Could also be a problem getting the door to slide on with a layer of paint. Dang.... starting to talk myself out of it. Masking the door would be a pain. Oh what the heck, I need an excuse for a bottom feeder anyway.

I made some guitar stands and a stand for an amp out of pvc pipe and used that Krylon paint, and it's held up really good. I did wipe the pipe down with acetone first tho.
sweet i need to get "in line" so i can grab one when you do.... you know how i love quality bottom feeders...
I think if you lay the box, and lid down on newspaper and spray them, I dont think too much would get in the crack where the lid makes contact with the box, but in the even it did get in there, it would be easy enough to scrape out with a hobby knife. I think an airbrush would be ideal. Another toy to buy... That will have to wait a little while though

Airbrush painting works great. DH did mine and followed with a coat of clear coat. It hasn't so much as gotten a scratch in the paint, so far. For the whole box, he taped/masked off areas he didn't want paint getting in (to protect inside as it was already built by Steve). DH has expensive airbrushes but any cheap'o one would work. JMO. But then you'd need air to use the air brush, so this may not be the option for everyone. I think they sell small canisters of compressed air fairly cheap at some places though.
One thing I had to do though after he painted it was let it cure. That will add to production time, I would think.
ETA: My hubby has thought about ordering some boxes (non-built) and painting up a few designs for proto-types to offer to modders.

I couldn't find a way to cover the on/off switch that looked like it would work, so chickened out, but after painting the rest, I think it will work without covering. Will try that after it dries good. I can't figure out how to post a picture, so will mail them to Steve and let him post it.

frisket works great for masking off. it's clear and easier to see exactly where it needs to go or be removed. it's thin and easy to cut away areas with an exacto blade.
liquid mask might work on larger areas, you can use a paint brush to paint it on exactly where you need it and use a exacto knife to remove areas that you want to uncover. I don't recall off hand how thick DH's liquid mask is though, it might not work on already built boxes for certain areas of the box...like the on/off button area.

masking off the button is easy. just use wide shipping tape, and tape it into a cylinder around the base of the button, allowing it to overlap on itself so it sticks, and then pinch off the top. it works sweet.
As far as the master switch, maybe you could try some wax that they use for hanging pictures, and just remove the wax when you are done painting it.
I have a big bag of 5v boxes that I may not be using, because I was not happy with how they looked. but if they are painted, they would look pretty. Let me know if your hubby wants to play with a few of them. I think I would be happy to give him four or five for free, if maybe by chance he would want to send one back painted for me

I have a small pancake air compressor for using a finishing nail gun, so maybe I need to invest in an airbrush kit. I will make this a goal of mine.

Thanks Steve. Yep, just Krylon for plastic furniture. Sprayed it as one unit and the door didn't stick. I should have centered the on/off switch and sprayed the whole thing. Maybe couldn't do that with clear coat.

I have some regular ones on order from somewhere just no luck with the large.*ponders the painting discussion* lol figure and easy way and you'd be just in time for halloween/xmas designs.
