Hello forum, I have a question regarding aluminum. Is it really dangerous to use in an atty? I want to make a copy of a bulli clone with my touch to it and saw that some bullis are alum. Are people getting hurt with these? I figured if they are bad for you, bulli shouldn't be selling them right? Or are they anodized? Some info would help before i burn some drills and break some taps with stainless. Thanks

Bulli's can come in aluminum. DCA's are aluminum. The first revision of the Torpedo tank was aluminum. Not to mention a host of others.

No one has gotten sick from them yet. That is, unless they died before they got to post about it. :p

I believe as long as the aluminum is not particulate, that it is not an issue. Also, of course you would want a high grade alloy suited to the application.

I kinda cringe when I hear people say that since this product or that item is made out of Aluminum, that it is somehow safe.

I also never put much faith in just because you don’t drop dead 10 seconds after using something, that it cannot hurt you in the long run.

I think if a person did a little research that they would find that Any Bare Alloy of Aluminum is an Extremely poor choice to use around Anything that goes into your body.

What kind of aluminum are the cans and kegs that I drink all my beer and soda made from? Foil that I cook food in and cover it to store it?? Is this some secret type of aluminum?

Not at all, the issue is that aluminum leeches into the liquids so there are pretty decent amounts of it being inhaled if your vaping toys are made of it. This might not be an issue, but we take in plenty of aluminum already and inhaling it added to all that we take in otherwise could cause an issue with aluminum toxicity the body which is not good, can cause many very bad things to happen. There are many different studies and safety sheets available online to read up on this so you definitely don't have to take my word for it.

I keep away from aluminum on mods as much as I can. It's not bad for battery tubes but I would not use it for a tank. Just my 2 cents worth :)

What kind of "Secret" Aluminum? There isn't such thing. ALL Beverage and Food containers used in the USA have a resin liner to prevent the product from coming in contact with the Bare Aluminum.

Don't get me wrong. If you want to make a mod out of Bare 2021 or 6061 or 7075, don't let me stand in your way. Or if you want to use mods made out of Bare Aluminum which are in the constant presence of e-Liquids, go for it.

BTW - Aluminum Foil is about the last thing I would wrap food in.

If you decide to go with SS, which is a Much better choice of material, you might look into "Four Hundred Series" Stainless verses "Three Hundred Series".

4xx SS has most of the Corrosion resistance properties as 3xx but is easier to machine/drill/tap.

3xx SS isn't the easiest thing to machine but it is doable. Just have to dial in your Speeds & Feeds a lot closer than something like Alum.

Also when it comes to tapping a Hard Alloy, consider using less Thread Height like 68% when you choose your drill size. The thread won't have as much Strength as a one with more Thread Height but Ultimate Strength isn't that important in an e-Cig mod.

Fundamental Rule in the Machine Shop: The Bigger the Drill used to establish the Minor Diameter of an Internal Thread, the Easier it is to Tap the Thread.

+1 on the Tap-Magic...be sure to get the right kind...anti seize compound works too if your not going deep. Never had much problems with SS at 60-70% thread. If possible ream the hole to size...twist drills dont make a very accurate hole when dealing with tight tolerance fine threads.

Dont know what your setup is but you might be able to drill oversize and press fit a different material in the hole and tap that...or a Helicoil.

6-32's are the ones you have to watch!!
