I have been looking at some YouTube videos on rebuilding and I noticed some people compress the coils together while others leave them separated.

Moving to coil builds killed your thread lol... I just happened upon this area because an interesting question was asked in the main discussion forum and I caught it before its transition to this area. I bet you would have a dozen answers by now if it were still in the general thread. Waaay too many forums on website.
And I was really hoping that your reply would be an answer to my question. Perhaps I should repost back in the general e-smoking discussion and see if it stays there.
Just keep bumping your thread. I've been spending quite a bit of time in this part of the forum for several days and there is quite a bit of activity over here. Don't worry, someone will give you a good answer eventually. I just started coil building but here's my take on it. I seem to like a tighter coil rather than one with the coils more seperated. It seems to produce more vapor.

Hmm - IMHO both approaches work.
I tend to favor compressed coils for RDAs, EVODs, protank etc and loose wrapped for genesis style atomizers.
Although I have used loose wrap coils (using a 4-40 screw for uniformity) in all my devices from time to time.
I do in general prefer compressed coils because it is easier to quickly change to fresh wick and they are heartier.
For cloud chasing I really like the simple wrapped coil: 24 gauge, 1/8" drill bit, 4 loose wraps twice on a single wire for dual coil - saw it on youtube(happyvape) - works really well.

I prefer compressed coils, with every coil touching. It helps heat up the coil faster, even when you are using a long length of wire.

A coil shouldn't have to "be compressed". It should be wrapped so the wraps touch.
It's very easy with the right tool and technique - much easier than trying to evenly space a coil.
Heating and squeezing a coil to make it touch is something people were doing 15 minutes ago. It's a brave new world and if you want your coils touching, here's a couple of very easy ways:

Try one. If you don't like it try it the other way.
Coils pressed together helps the whole thing heat more like a whole unit. Spaced apart heats from the center out. (They both really heat from the center out.)
I tried sub-ohm. Pressed together it heated too fast and probably ran dry in the center. Spaced apart it was OK.
On my mesh wicked gennies pressed together helps heat up the wick making the whole thing act like the heating unit.
