I am in the market for a new mech mod. I really like some of the copper mods and my birthday is coming up, so I thought I let my wife buy me a nice copper mod. I only have some concerns about the copper itself. Is it toxic if I keep touching copper for a long period of time? Some reviews I saw on youtube, it was mentioned that after using a copper mod, their hands were smelling like metal. So I am a bit hesitant now whether or not I should get a copper mod or just another stainless steel one?

Anyone owning copper mods or anyone that has some medical insight about the safe use of touching copper please advise.

Thank you

Copper can contain lead but it depends on the grade of it. It would be in amounts so minute its hardly.worth worrying about there would be more lead content coming from your tap water because of leaded brass faucet parts. Edit: I work in the hardware business and handle alot of copper daily and I can say my health is not for the worse for it if its us based copper I can almost guarantee its lead free with all that prop 65 business lately

You will get that coppery smell after touching copper. It is because pure copper oxidizes fairly quickly. That is why copper things like mods will quickly develop a patina. With that in mind, though, that patina or oxidized copper will actually protect your mod from further oxidation. In fact, once you get that deep patina, you'll notice less of the copper smell on your hand. It's quite safe. Otherwise, issues would have come up with people touching copper pennies in older US currency. Also, you'll find cookware comes in copper due to its heating properties.

My only concern with copper is the fact that it is such a soft metal. I would ding up a copper mod fairly quickly given I pocket carry my mod next to my wallet and/or phone.

Thanks guys for your replies, I really appreciate it. I did some research before asking here in the forums and this is one of the websites that gave me some info about copper toxicity. That is why I came here and make sure I don't make a mistake. Apparently, if you read the "Environmental Copper" part of the article, it could indeed pose a threat.

Please feel free to comment, I'm just being very careful here :)

it's safe, especially a high-end mod that will likely be 99.5% copper at least.... Scott's The Copper should drop this weekend, I believe

but maybe consider one of these

Yes, in the right amounts inside your body, copper can be toxic. However, unless you have some REALLY odd body chemistry and sleep with your mech tucked in your armpit, I don't believe that you'll pick up enough copper molecules to make a difference.

Think of it this way. There is a very good chance that you are getting more copper from the plumbing in your home than you could ever hope to get from holding a mod. Your skin is an almost impermeable barrier to disease and infection, and any copper that might rub off the mod and get on your skin will most likely get washed off rather than ingested.
