Hi, I'm a new member trying to get my own e-cig and I must say, I'm very excited.
Inspired by my friend who is also an e-cig smoker, I've been trying to find one that was suitable for me. First, I don't really like having cartridges that you have to switch. I'd rather have the one that you actually fill up with liquid (I think that's the one that my friend has) manually. It's very difficult for a beginner to look for e-cigs. I saw GreenSmoke, blu and SafeSmoke so far...but since they're the well known ones, I was wondering if you guys could help me find something here lol!
I don't really mind it looking like an analogue cig...I'd rather much prefer it look like an e-cig. So which ones should I consider or would you guys recommend?

Thanks in advance! Oh, and I'd appreciate any info I should know about e-cigs in general .

Welcome to the forum and vaping. It's exciting. I still remember the excitement waiting for my first e-cig in the mail. I'm sure you'll be very pleased with it.

Depending on how much you want to vape I would recommend against a ciggy style e-cig. The battery life is pretty short and unless you are a light vaper (I don't know maybe you will be), you'll get tired of dead batteries pretty quick. My recommendation would be a Riva or eGo with a cartomizer. I use the Boge cartomizers and like them a lot.

I made the mistake of insisting on a ciggy style device when I started. Waste of money for me. You think that's what you want, but after you've been vaping for a short time, you find it's secondary compared to battery life. Also, I would recommend against an automatic battery. The sensors tend to fail on them. The manual batteries are much more reliable.

Don't forget to order extra juice. New vapers always seem to run out before they realize they needed to order more. You should start with high nic, 36mg (3.6%) if you smoke full flavor cigs, 24mg (2.4%) if you smoke light cigs, 18mg if you smoke ultra-lights. You'll likely vape lower mg eventually (just works out that way), but you want to start high.

Glad to have you here. Take time to do a little research and read information here on this site. There are several posts going on right now, with many answers to your question.
You can also go to YouTube and there are many videos that
give reviews and how to's as well.

If your read and learn here....hopefully you will pick up on something that most all experienced vapors will tell you.....

"Be open minded about your ecig not looking just like a regular cigarette"

There are many reasons for that, one main one being the battery life. It is VERY important in your overall ecig experience.

Recommendations are each person's individual experience with a particular model.
You might end up with a model or two, before you find the "right" one for you.
It matters how much of a smoker that you at the present time as well.
AND how your experience will be after 30-60 days of use of a particular model/ecig.

So my advice is spend some time reading here, you need to understand what your options are
and for what reasons that they have been given to you and what YOU are looking for in your
particular needs and smoking habits at present time.

I am so glad that you found your way here. It has been a great experience for me and many
others here.

Hi Statue and welcome to the forum.

Have you seen this article yet? The Wonderful World of Vaping | Vaping Guides It has so much information about the different models available.

From the information in your post, if you are okay with an ecig that looks like an ecig and you want to avoid cartridges, a 510 Riva or eGo with cartomizers might be a potential candidate for your starter.

What he said. ;)

I started with a Blu and it's going back as soon as I get my KR808D-1 in the mail. The 808 is great if your looking for that analog looking style. If your not and would rather have long battery life then I would def go with the eGo or Riva. To my understanding they are pretty much the same but the Riva is more of an off brand so it's cheaper. Good luck!

Oh and def check out these videos! I wish I had seen them before I bought my Blu.

Hello and welcome! My advice (which somemight disagree with) is not to be sucked in by the pvs you have been seeing. Do some more research before you buy. I went with one that looked like a cig the first time and was very disappointed with many aspects of it. The guide that ShannonS posted above looks like its got tons of great info on it and very well organised as well. Do count on a greater initial outlay of money to get started.. you will need plenty of juice (i recommend getting at least 5sampler-sized bottles of different flavours- there are a few out there who have deals on sample bottles- more is better if you can afford it and try whatever sounds good to you, not just tobacco flavors), extra supplies such as attys and batteries and such in addition to whatever starter kit you choose.
Do keep an open mind about your supplies as well- I though cartridges were the right thing for me... but now I am dripping and that works best for me although I have yet to try cartomisers which i hear are pretty great too.
Do get a higher nic content in at least a couple liquids than you think you'll need.
Also, do not be discouraged if you do not quit smoking on the first day of vaping. It might take awhile- it took me several weeks before I quit kind of by accident and have not returned to analogs since.
Finally, if you have a question about any of the things you read about... come on here and ask!! the people here are friendly, knowlegable, and very helpful. Good luck!

EDIT: I should also mention I now use a Joye 510 eGo which I love very much and highly recommend.

OP said they did not care about it looking like a regular cig.

Shannon pointed you to good info. KR808D-1 and 510/Riva/eGo are the two most popular off-the-shelf families of ecigs around ECF, with a lot of people also going for various mods. The 808 runs at a true 3.7V, while the 510/Riva/eGo (a different connector than the 808) apparently has regulated output around 3.1V; 510/eGo/Riva users need to use a lower resistance (LR) atomizer or cartomizer if they want to get the same warmth (power) as you get on an 808 for a given resistance atomizer/cartomizer.

I started with an 808, still use them a lot -- the XL batteries are quite nice, 380 mAh, and there are some big battery versions like the Greenworld G400 with 900 mAh batteries, run a loong time between recharges.

I recently picked up a Riva 510 -- a 750 mAh battery ecig. I find it quite nice when using a 2 ohm Boge cartomizer, same vapor and warmth as a standard 808. liberty-flights.com has an excellent sale on them right now, $30 after their current 20% discount (the code is on their site). vapor-pure also has super Riva 510 pricing, should be getting new stock in the the next week or two.

For 808 family I've used NHaler, vapor4life (their VaporKing line are KR808D-1) and vaporsetc -- good service from them. They all have various discounts, just poke about.

Good luck and welcome!

I started with the Volcano which after reading some on here I think is similar to a 306 or a blu. Used it for a day and ordered an eGo. Couldn't be happier with the eGo. With the Volcano, while it was ok, I still needed the occasional analog to satisfy myself, with my new eGo I've been going 3 days without even really craving one. I think if you used to be a pack a day smoker you may want to go with something with a bigger battery. I'm new to this as well so take my recommendations knowing I've only been vaping for a little while and haven't tried all the different options out there. It seems everyone has a different opinion. I think everyone agrees that you need keep trying different types and combinations until you find something that suits your needs.

From my experience, when I started out I didn't want to look like a nerd.. So, I went through a few of the crappy "cigarette" looking, pen style e-cigs and I almost quit vaping all together because the quality of those things just isnt there.. The I found the eGo was coming out, read about it HERE.. bought it and I was totally happy with it, ive had it since it's first production launch and it kept me vaping, was a solid unit.. now I've out-grown it, but it is the reason why I'm still vaping..

The combo that really made me happy, and everyone has their own opinion ( have to find your own ) is 1.5ohm Low Resistance Magnum 510 atomizers and juice from NHaler.com.. really made the eGo experience even better

You can find LR attys anywhere, and juice falls from the sky these days, but nhaler and the eGo kept me coming back. ( I don't work for them, not trying to name drop, their customer service and attys are the best i've found so far. I'm always looking too)

I bought & still using a Smoke Stik. It does have a prefilled cartomizer, so I ordered extra. I do refill them fron the battery end and it is very easy. Also it looks like a cigarette, and some don't like that. I have been very pleased with it for three months. I ordered a 510 from a reputable company and gave thise away because I thought they were cheap. It really is individul taste, but for ease, I would recommend one like mine. If you want to branch out after that, go for it!!

Make sure whatever you order has two batteries.

Boy can I relate to that, I thought it would take forever to get mine in the mail. Almost made the fatal mistake of running to the mall and picking one up LOL. Thanks to this forum, I was able to wait, and had part of my starter kit, in less than a week, whew!!

"Depending on how much you want to vape I would recommend against a ciggy style e-cig. The battery life is pretty short and unless you are a light vaper (I don't know maybe you will be), you'll get tired of dead batteries pretty quick."

At first I thought I wanted mine to feel and look like a "real" ciggy. But now, I know I don't, and I'm glad that I didn't go that route. However, I did go the route of same size of a "real" ciggy. I'm burning through my 2 batteries back and forth on the 1 wall charger I have. My other chargers, are still on back order from the company I chose : ( So I'm already looking into alternatives, I just don't know what that will be yet : )

Personally I made sure to order plenty of cartomizers. But the more I read the more I know I'm gonna want to buy juice and fill carty's myself. Still researching on how to do that, the best way, without harming my batteries : )

Hmmm in the quote area on the above reply I tried to write in the quote area but in red so it would stand out. But I see that didn't work, sorry. You can still read my replies to each quote though if you read in the light blue quote area. Again, sorry about that. I don't know why that didn't work. It showed the codes in there for the color when I was writing it. But didn't show up when I hit the quick reply button.

Wow. I must say I'm very impressed with the answers and I appreciate them a lot. I didn't know much about them so hearing all these suggestions are making me very excited on which ones I should be looking for!
I will definitely do my research before buying mine so I won't be disappointed. Both eGo and Riva seems like a very good option, I'll compare them thoroughly before I make my purchase.
I'm not a fan of pre-filled cartridges just because it feels like I'm gonna be restricted on the type of e-liquids I can buy. And for the looks, just to clarify, I like the cool e-cig looks rather than just a normal analogue look haha.
