To get started recoiling kanger heads, I ordered some 31awg kanthal, 2mm and 3mm hollow ekowool, 1mm silica, and an ohm tester box. My question is, is the rated size of ekowool the outer diameter, or the inner diameter of the hollow rope. This stuff hasn't arrived in the mail yet, and I've been obsessing over this while waiting.

I want to try making micro coils on a 5/64" drill bit, and then threading the wick thru. I am also going to get a bag of organic cotton to try as well. I know the cotton will be easily threaded thru the micro coil, but not sure if this is possible with the ekowool, and may have to hand wrap the around the wick itself.

I've watched a ton of recoil videos, but most video authors use cotton, but I want to try the ekowool as well. Not sure my wife, who uses sweet juice will want to rewick cotton all the time. How long would a cotton wicked protank/evod last until rewicking is needed with sweet (dutch apple pie) juice?

I've used 3mm threaded Ekowool, not hollow. And it's not easy to thread through a microcoil. I ended up wrapping a micro-coil around it and it worked well. Not quite a true micro-coil, but close enough.

The 2mm will work better, doubled over and use a small piece of kanthel to act as a needle to pull the Ekowool through.

I've since moved on to cotton after trying out XC-116 (Rediwick, I think he's calling it now), which I liked for drippers. I still have a few feet of Ekowool in my vape closet, just in case I tire of the cotton. But cotton works best in the kayfun style attys, and that's where I'm at now. Besides, even organic cotton balls are cheap, and I am on a fixed budget.

best of luck.

I think it depends on who you buy it from, as far as what their measurements mean.

When it comes to Ekowool usually the size listed is for the inner diameter, where as normal silica is the outer diameter. When you wrap a coil on Ekowool the center is pretty much collapsed so the inner diameter isn't of much importance anyway.

For example I used a single length of 3mm ekowool most of the time in my RDAs before I got into cotton, but the actual diameter of the 3mm ekowool is closer to 5mm or so depending on what side you are looking at. Ekowool kind of flattens down too so it's difficult to get the coil perfectly round and it usually turns out slightly more oval shaped when wrapping coil-on-wick. Assuming the place you bought it from is using the inside diameter measurement, 3mm ekowool will probably be way to thick to use in your heads.

Personally I don't feel ekowool with its braided weave is a very good form of silica to use when building protank style heads if you are doing the typical small diameter compressed coils. But then again I find silica a bit of a pain to use on any coil where you thread the wick through instead of wrapping on the wick.

If you unravel the braid on ekowool you get some really fine diameter strands of soft flexible silica that actually work great for wicking PT style heads. They aren't individual strands, just very thin sections of twised silica. Make a loop, pull the loop through the coil with a piece of kanthal, then clip both ends flush with the head. Aside from using cotton this was the most convenient and best performing method of wicking PT style heads that I've used. If you put a small dab of juice on your finger, and run it down the length of the silica it stays together better and is a little easier to work with too.

I have not used ekowool, but i have used sillica and cotton and truthfully cotton is hands down the best. I recommend boiling it. But in all honesty its easier, and tastes better. It is very easy to rewick. Also i have used the same cotton wick in my aerotank vaping Vanilla bean ice cream for about three days (i chain vape HARD) i dont see myself rewicking till next week sometime.
