Apologies if this was already answered... couldn't find it.

When plugging values into the DIY mixing calculator and looking at the reference strength guidelines, what do you do when you mix two flavors from different manufacturers and their recommended strength aren't 1:1?

i.e. the rec strength for one flavor is 2% and the other 15%. Does this mean the optimum combined flavor strength is 17%, or do I need to do some math and get total flavor strength % to 20% regardless?

Or is it all trial and error?

Need more information.
Which calculator?
Which flavorings, from which manufacturers?

I assume you're talking about using two different flavorings, one strong (2%) and one medium (15%). To me, which manufacturer they came from doesn't matter; it's the quality of taste that the flavoring imparts that's important.

As for the amounts of flavorings to use, that depends upon the preferences of the person the eliquid is created for. Best thing to do is read as much as you can about how others have used of each particular flavoring, then take an educated guess when making the first batch of your own recipe.

You can also make someone else's recipe that's similar to the one you want to create, try that and get a better idea of how much flavoring to use in your recipe.

Mostly trial and error, but for your example 17% would probably be a starting point.

Some flavors boost each other while others do the opposite, and some pretend the other doesn't matter.

If you have one flavor working at 2% and another working at 15%, try mixing those two test batches together at 50/50 and see if it works. I've done it this way before, but it has never worked the way I expected yet. Might work for you?

I would keep the base the same and divide the flavorings in half. So 1% of the strong flavoring and 8.5% of the other. However, you never really know how flavors will mix and match. Some flavors like tobacco will really mask other flavors, cinnamon is the same way. So if you are using them you might be better off with say 25% and 75% or in other words .5% and 12.75%.
