I understand these things have batteries in them, Does that even include the ones that the cord is not disconnect-able?

Main question is: When your hooked up to your laptop, vaping away is the battery detiorating? and does the use of the device depend of the battery? if so, i guess this means the passthrough only lasts as long as the battery?

Maybe i'm totally wrong, please someone help me understand how they work?

I have a Riva 510 being delivered tomorrow, and I want to get a passthrough from home use. Can't decide if I should get the more expensive Ego passthrough which you can disconnect and have a charged battery ready to go, or get a cheaper standard 510 passthrough which you cannot disconnect?

not all PT have batteries, mine doesnt. but from other members ive found that if they do have a bat in them you can use it then when you need to get up and go you will still have a charge on it and beable to use it for while, generaly speaking if your pt has a bat then while its pluged in your laptop is charging the batt while its letting you use it, some what like a resister. ive also gatherd that if your PT has a bat you will not be using true 5V more like 3.7V or somewhere along those lines. ive had my PT for about a month and have no problems but many will tell you YMMV, hope i was able to help in some way, best of luck to ya!-)

I have a tw tornada passthrough. I love it. I use it when on the computer. I use other batteries for "on the go vaping".
I have not seen replacement batteries for the Tornada/ego 650. I bought 2 units during TW(totally wicked) yo-yo sale. I placed a LR mega attie on it. Great vape for me.

As recommending I cannot. This is subjective to your needs.

Unless I'm mistaken the regular 510 passthroughs do not work as a regular battery. It recieves all of its juice from the power source. And, you will get more power (5 volt?). The eGo/Riva passthrough simply charges as you use it and will only give you the power of the battery through it (3.2-3.7).

I use the eGo passthrough so I have the convenience and security of having an extra battery that is always charged and can be used as an "on the go" back up if necessary.

There are some 510 PT's that can be disconnected and used like a regular battery. They call them the "Sit 'N Go" just like the eGo PT and they function the exact same way. When it's hooked up to the cord it charges even while you're using it. The 3.7V 510 PT's have the inline battery and can be disconnected and used for a short while, but the cord comes with you. The 5V versions do not have an inline battery and will not work unless they are connected to a power souce. It is recommended that the 5V be connected to a wall outlet rather than your PC, but I used mine on the USB of my computer without any trouble. Now, the PT options on my mods are something entirely different. Both of them need to use a wall outlet and there's no way I'd try them on a computer.

This is what concerns me. What happens when the battery dies on this? gotta get another PT?

Think i'm leaning towards the ones without batteries in that case, and just having a good supply of batteries I can charge separately.

Thanks for your responses everyone!

Yes. When the PT stops working you need to buy another one. I've had my 510 PT since September of last year and it still works great I just don't use it as much these days because I enjoy my mods much more.

Probably why it's lasted since september then. lol

Not really. I used the hell out of it on a daily basis until the end of December when I got my Chameleon. It was my primary dripping device and got tons of use while my eGo/Riva batts where on their chargers. Plus I'm a tad bit OCD when it comes to taking care of my "techie" stuff. I have a Nokia cell phone from the mid 90's that doesn't have a scratch on it and would probably work like new if activated it.

I have just a regular 510 passthrough for about $10! I compared prices and decided that the passthroughs with the batteries were kind of expensive at $22-$25 and I can order another Riva kit for $30 and get 2 more batteries and 2 xtra atties and backup charger! I guess theres pro's and con's on both sides...just seemed more economical for me!

I don't have a 510 passthru of any kind. My M401 PT has no battery.

I do not use PTs on the computer USB because not all computers have 1 amp available at their USB ports and some people have ruined their computer or car USB ports using PTs according to one vendor that had a warning.

I use a Rosewill 4-port USB to AC adapter max 2amp I got at NewEgg (can charge up to 4 normal e-cig batteries if you have enough cables, or run a PT while charging 2)

I had a couple of 901 PTs and I think they died as soon as I used them with a USB car charger (it had 1amp or better output), so I gave up on those. I switched to a 510 and got the Sit n Go; the cutoff time prevented the carto or atty from heating up enough (at least for my taste). It seemed to cut off just before it was producing good vapor. So I wasn't overly impressed with it. The battery didn't seem to last any longer either, seemed just a battery with a built in charger.

How about this as an option: Check the modders section on making a 5 volt direct-PT. You need a battery connector from a dead battery of choice (e.g. 510 connector), a 3.0 amp button, an old USB cord and enclosure. If you don't mind a bit of soldering (even if you have to borrow a soldering iron)... If you scrounge around you may only need to buy the "wall wart" (2.0 amp), maybe a button.

No batteries to worry about, and since you built it yourself, you can repair it too.

I purchased a 5v direct PT for around, IDK, $10-$15 USD, and it died after a month or so. I've heard similar stories... juice get in the button, bad wire on the end that gets a break in it, buttons stick on.... So I built one and it has never failed <knocks on wood>.....

My mod never leaves my hands so I say WTH would I want a PT and be tethered to my computer

Both of my mods have PT options. Sometimes I use them while I'm charging batteries and sometimes it's just because I want to vape at 5V. Other than that, my mod usually doesn't leave my hands a whole lot, either.

I don't do 5v either my norm is 7.4v (2 18350's) and 6v at the lowest :)
Have enough batteries to jump start my truck too so don't matter how many are charging LOL

I don't know that I could vape 7.4V. I really have to be in the mood to vape 6V! But I have notice that my battery collection is growing...

This could get very scary...
