So I just ordered a short DID as my first venture into rebuildable attys. I have one point of concern regarding oxidizing the wick. Search yielded nothing relevant.

I generally stick to liquids with high VG ratios, and my understanding is that it can decompose into acrolein at temperatures above 300 C. Since the consensus appears to be that to properly oxidize it you must ignite the liquid, I would assume this takes it above that temperature.

So basically, is it safe to light 100% VG on fire? Perhaps I could just find some pure PG to use for setting it up (if anyone points me in that direction, it would be appreciated). Just want to keep with the trend of this not killing me

From what I have read and seen of my failed atomizers the wick gets clogged and the heating element will get a crust on it that will shorten the life. When the wick gets gunked up I clean it in everclear. There is a thread on here that has a good bunch of cleaning suggestions. I clean the wick in the alcohol and then clean the element with Hydrogen peroxide (hot). But you need to read the whole thing to do it right and safe. Inhaling H2O2 would be a bad thing I think. I'll see if i can find the thread and post it .

Perhaps I should have clarified a bit more. What I'm referring to is with making the stainless steel mesh wick for genesis style attys. There's a bit of preparation involved with making the wick for it and I was questioning the safety on that.

Thank you for that thread link though. I still use regular atomizers and that seems to be an easier option than what I'm doing.

That's a great question. I do 3x juice burns on new wicks without concern because I don't feel I'll ever get anywhere close to the amount of acrolein that is hazardous. You also don't need to burn the juice completely on the wick prep. You may want to post to the DID thread, very helpful folks there. http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/euro-suppliers/296166-new-genesis-type-atomizer-did.html

A quick Google search: The WHO suggests a "tolerable oral acrolein intake" of 7.5 mg/day per kilogram of body weight. Although acrolein occurs in French fries, the levels are only a few micrograms per kilogram.

I wanted to post there, but I'm confined to the new users forum for one more post. I lurk too much. I didn't know that about the tolerable levels. Way it's talked about makes me feel like the smallest bit will kill me. That makes me feel much better about it.

The cotton idea Rader posted is an awesome idea too. I may have to try that once my DID comes in.

Thanks guys. I think that answers it pretty well.
