Question about wiring in parallel

I picked up a 4xAA box at the Shack today....was just planning on using it for a couple 14500's at 3.7v but was thinking: I'll have 3 slots for batteries, since I'm wiring it in parallel, can I wire all three slots and use only two batteries (leaving the 3rd slot for when I get another 14500)? Or would that not work....

It would work fine in parallel.

it would also work in series also.

You can run it on one battery as well if you feel the need.

Not sure how you would do that with a missing bat unless you wired around it.
