I've only been vaping for a couple of days, but so far the experience has been great. I recently ordered a bunch of flavors from FS USA, but I had a question about the RY4, Banana Nut Bread, and Butterscotch flavors in particular.

Based on my limited experience, I think I prefer tobacco and creamier flavored liquids. So, I ordered the RY4, Banana Nut Bread and Butterscotch flavors from FS USA. I received them in the mail today, and they smelled great when I opened the bottles. All of them shared a caramel scent, which I loved. However, when I vaped them, they all also had a faint sour taste to them. This kind of sour taste was strongest in the RY4 and Butterscotch. It wasn't overpowering, but definitely noticeable enough.

Have any of you guys noticed this? Or do you think its just my taste buds? Do you think steeping would help (I've read on ECF that the RY4 benefits most from steeping)? I also wonder if the sour note has anything to do with the caramel flavor, because I detected the caramel smell in all 3 flavors.

I'm hoping the slightly sour taste I'm getting disappears after some steeping because I love the smell of all three flavors . . . and I hope that the taste will eventually match the smell!

Thanks in advance for your responses!

I would bet that steeping will do the trick. I use alot of caramel flavors and all of the creamy flavors really benefit the most from steeping IMO. Try taking the lid off and leaving it off for 24 hours. Shake well and then give it a try. You will be surprised at the difference that will make.
PS - remember to put it somewhere that it will be safe and not get knocked over:) You may want to watch the video at the top in the stickys on steeping. Good luck.

Edit- Well our steeping video seems to be MIA. Let me try and find it for you.

Yup, Salem's dead on.

Some flavors, especially creamy ones, do need to steep for a bit before they taste right. What I do is give them a good shake, take off the cap and the dripper tip, and leave it open (away from kids or pets!) for a day or so. Then I recap, shake it up good, and try it again.

Sometimes that's all it takes, sometimes it needs a week or two. If it needs more time, I'll open it up again for a few hours at a time whenever I think to do it, re-cap, shake, and put it away until I remember again, tasting it again once a day or so.

For me, RY4 starts tasting better quickly - but a lot of people disagree with me on that one. Butterscotch tends to need a little more time.

All of the above on this thread....since I'm in Canada, it takes 3 weeks or so to get here. In that time. most of RY4 & creamy like juices have steeped nicely. But I do leave them to the open air in a dark (secure) place for a week anyways. These types of juices only get better with time.

As we speak, I'm just vaping an RY4 delivered on Dec 18th for the first time...needless to say, awesome vape.

Thanks for the advice, guys!

I guess I should have let it steep before I posted this question, but I got too excited and vaped them right out of the mail!

So, I let them steep, uncapped for 24 hours, and the "sour" taste is already completely gone! I'm vaping the banana nut bread as I type this. I'm going to go ahead and leave the liquids alone for a week to steep, and see how the flavors develop.

I just ordered some RY5, Hypnotic Mist, and Wyatt Earp from FS USA. I'll make sure to let it steep for a day before I try it out this time! Thanks again for the advice!

Personally, I like RY4 and RY5 within a couple of days after receiving a package. But, the flavor gets so much better the longer it sits. I just finished filling a carto with the rest of my RY5 from mid-October. I'm so sad that it's gone, but I've got another bottle that's about a month old. Let the butterscotch steep longer than a week. When it turns to a deep orange color, that's when it's ready to vape.

oxygen works wonders on flavors. if we weren't so fast in shipping we would pre steep them for you for a day before shipping :)

Keep on shipping the way you are, we love the fast shipping. I try to keep at least 1 flavor steeping then have one that is already steeped so I won't be S.O.L

To me, RY4 is much better after about a week (and I leave it uncapped for about 24 hours when I receive the bottles), but it's great after a month. Really!

Also, another factor is when you're new to vaping (and quit smoking), your taste buds will go through a healing process for a few weeks or a couple of months. The same flavors often tasted different to me during my first month or so of vaping. After that, things were much more consistent (flavors, throat hits, etc).

Definitely. I just tried the Blueberry Pancake, and right after it was mixed, it had the same taste most freshly-made creamy flavors do to me - slightly cardboard-ish. It goes away after a day or two of steeping with the lid off, and now it tastes great to me.

But someone I know who still smokes a bit tried it when it was brand spankin' new, and couldn't taste that cardboard taste I was talking about at all. In fact, she reckoned it needed more flavor! To me, it seemed plenty strong as it was, and still does after steeping.

I remember when I first started with vaping, I'd do my DIY's sometimes with as much as 25% flavor. Seriously. That's what it took for me to be able to taste anything.

Now, 6 months after quitting, 2-8% flavor usually does the trick depending on the flavor. 25% flavor would probably make my head explode now!

findmatt - Here's another thought. In the last two days, I've noticed more of a bitter taste, but I realized that's because I've been testing some new liquids that haven't steeped long enough (which tends to mess up my taste buds for a few hours). I could be wrong, but I believe the sour or bitter taste is the nicotine liquid that hasn't mixed in good enough yet with the rest of the liquids. The bitter taste should go away after a couple of days (a week is better and a month is even better), after the flavorings have had more time to mix in with the other liquids.

MistressNomad - I'm finding that 20 to 25% is way too much flavor, too. It's amazing that one drop of certain (FlavourArt) flavorings in 5 mL of base liquid is enough, but that's what I'm discovering. I remember when Salem posted recently that 1 to 5% for FlavourArt flavorings is normal. I thought that sounded low (based on recipes I've seen), but I believe she's right. Which reminds me, is there a page somewhere that lists the percentages that FSUSA uses when mixing flavorings, ethyl maltol, vape wizard, bitter wizard, magic mask, and caramel syrup? Although I'll continue to vape the same FSUSA juices, I'm always interested in learning more about what I'm consuming. Thanks!

The percentage of flavoring we use varies depending on the flavor. Some are stronger or weaker than others. We don't use any additives, though. We do sell them for DIY'ers, because they want them. But we only use PG/VG, flavor, and nic in our juice. We find that we don't need any additives to make it taste great. :)
