I'm finally diving into rebuilding and I have a few questions. First off, I ordered a hcigar Kayfun 3.1 Clone that I'll be using on a Vamo V5 as well as a Lavatube 2.5. I eventually plan on trying to wick with cotton but to start off I've decided to go with silica. I like a pretty strong TH but my main goal is flavor and I'm not real concerned with producing clouds of vapor. I'm wondering what size of Kanthal I should use and what size of silica I should use and what level of ohms I should shoot for? I plan on starting out with a standard wrap and eventually trying out a micro coil build but for now I'm trying to keep it simple so would it make sense to just go with a 4-5 wrap to achieve a high level of flavor as well as a nice TH? I know a lot of this depends on the RBA that is being used so if you've used the hcigar Kayfun clone I would really appreciate your input and thanks ahead of time.

My advice (such as it is) is to look on YouTube for reviews of the Kayfun clone and see what they do. I find I learn the most from watching other people do it.

I've watched so many YouTube RBA videos that I'll probably start dreaming about RBAs,lol. It seems like they all have a different recommendation as far as the ohms, what type of wrap and size of kanthal and silica to use. YouTube has been great for learning the basics of building a coil though.

Cant be of much help with the kayfun because i dont own one. But what i can tell you is, dont worry too much about the ohms. Just make shure you keep the resistance over 1ohm or your devices might not fire.

The people that need to be too concerned with them are those who use non variable power devices. Specially those without even variable voltage. Because the output of their device will depend on the ammount of ohms in their atties.
The people with VV devices will mind them as a guide on how to set their voltage.
But your Vamo (and i think your lavatube as well?) have variable power, and thats the beauty of VP. You dont even need to know the ohms in your attie. Just set your power, and the device will adjust the voltage automatically to give you the power you requested.

Perfect question for me I guess as I have a HCigar 3.1 sitting on V5 right now.
There are obviously a thousand ways to achieve the same end result but I get awesome vapor production and more flavor then I've gotten from anything else with these two setups.

I prefer the microcoil / organic cotton better. I have A1 Kanthal in 27,28,30 and 32 AWG. I generally build anything from 1.5 ohm to 2.5 ohm coils but my personal favorite is a 2.0 ohm 28 AWG microcoil wrapped 9 times around a 2mm drill bit. I notice if I create 1.0 to 1.8 ohm coils using smaller gauge (30/32 AWG) micro coils with cotton they perform awesome at 6-10 watts but any higher and you burn the cotton.

Honestly, I'd grab both some 32 and some 28 gauge kanthal. The 32 is good for medium resistance builds, and the 28 is good for lower resistance or for fine tuning your build. 100' of each is 7.50 from Lightning vapes on Amazon, and it's probably more than a years supply. Microcoils are easy and produce good results with either.

What you are planning has been the most dependable setup for me with the Kayfun. I'm wrapping 28 gauge Kanthal over three layers of 2mm Ekowool, leaving the tails hanging into the juice well area in that typical Kayfun 'S' shape. Meters at 0.9 ohms and vapes very well on a mechanical mod. I would use 30 gauge to keep your resistance a bit higher for the Vamo or LT. Be careful to not get silica over top of the juice channels or it will not wick well enough.

Yeah, I've seen that video by Seth and I notice he use's a 3-4 wrap with 28 gauge kanthal and 3mm silica, but the pre-wrapped coil that comes with the Kafun clone appears to have around 7 wraps but I don't know what gauge the kanthal is. So say I am shooting for 2.0 to 2.5 ohms, what would you recommend for a standard coil as far as the gauge of kanthal, how many wraps and what size of silica? I'm leaning towards 32 gauge kanthal, 3mm silica and a 4-5 wrap. Where do you think this would put my ohms?

Dave, your ohms of any build will be determined by the overall length of the coil. So it's going to depend on a number of factors. If you double the 3 mm silica over like the video above or triple it over to make a figure 8 type wick that will be a longer length of Kanthal per wrap. Also how close or far away the wraps are apart will also effect length. Just to give a rough number I wrapped a 3mm drill bit just now with 32 AWG using a wrap spacing that I would consider a "standard coil" and got 1.4 for 3 wraps and 1.8 for 4 wraps.

I usually use a 2mm drill bit but you may want to look at a larger size if you are using silica. When I wrap silica I triple the silica over into a figure 8 and use a small sewing needle on top of the silica and then wrap the silica directly.

To shoot for 2.0 to 2.5 ohm I use 28,30 or 32 AWG. Obviously results will differ because of the aforementioned reasons. Using a 2 mm drill bit 28 AWG = 8-10 microcoil / 5-7 standard wraps, 30 AWG = 6-8 microcoil / 4-6 standard wraps and 32 AWG = 4-6 microcoil wraps / 3-4 standard wraps.
