I recently quit smoking (2 months ago) and use my K100+ w/ dripper mod daily and my wife with a variable voltage ego and kanger tanks. We normally use store bought juice 6-12 mg of nic, but where I live its an hour drive to get it. I have a point to this long winded post, so please bare with me......
My wife and I decided to try and make our own so we did a weeks worth of research. We decided that if we can make our own we can make juice for all our friends too. We settled on the 100mg 125ml (50/50) nic from my freedom smokes, a gallon of PG and a gallon of VG from essential depot, various flavors from TPA, and plenty of mixing utensils, syringes, mason jars etc... We noticed that a 50/50 mix (even figuring in the pg content in the flavoring) with 20% flavor and 6mg nic was a good start via all the e-forums and blogs. So that's what we did. We made 10 base fruit flavors at 75ml quantities each with the above combination and let them steep. We did the steep process like this..... shake vigorously right away for 3-4 minutes, then placed in hot water with lid on for a few hours, lid off for 48 hours and lid back on for over a week with a quick shake every day. We tried them every other day or so to see if they improve, but they do not. Some have even lost their flavor all together. I affirm that all my measurements are dead correct with the percentages / ml amounts to each flavor. They taste, for a lack of better description, chemical'y, nothing we made is close to anything we have ever "store bought".

This evening, we decided something must be wrong, so we tried the PG straight from the gallon jug on our finger tip and it was just AWFUL, ( we expected it to be a bad taste)! We tried the VG from the gallon jug and it tasted somewhat similar to honey :) .

I guess my question here is... is the flavor to much or too little? Did I possibly get a bad batch of PG? Is there a "secret step" I am missing? I live far from any type of "vape' store so getting this DIY procedure down will keep our cigg habit at bay:mad:

Here & There
All flavors do not require the same percentages so yes 20 percent will be too high in many cases with TFA unless a person is vaping almost all VG and even that will vary from person to person as taste is so individual. The general rule is higher PG less flavor needed-- higher VG more flavor needed. Heating is not necessary and making much smaller quantities of individual flavors and sampling before adding the nic solution is generally the best way to go. I have never gotten rancid PG or VG ---chemically taste usually means overflavored. It is possible and expected for nic solution to age when exposed to heat, light and air that is why I make smaller batches and put my nic in the freezer. We have a DIY section please feel free to join us there and lots of helpful posts and people. Welcome to ECF!

If I can make one more recommendation it would be to try other flavoring brands besides TFA as some like their flavors and some do not. Not the easiest brand for a beginner.

Thanks for the idea pal. PG is gross. I just tried it on my finger and yep. gross.
Mine's from Tractor Supply and it's USP so it's exactly what it's supposed to be.
I expected it to be unflavored like water. ewww.

It sounds like you used too much flavor. I don't use TPA but what you describe sounds like over flavoring.

This should help - E-Cigarette Forum - Hoosier - Blogs

Mogwli has me too scared to taste my PG and will just take your guys' word for it that it's terrible, don't want to be up all night scrubbing off my tongue.

It wears off fast. Just spit it out, take a hit off your pv and a hit off your drink.
It'll be distant memory before you quit saying ewwww.

You know you're gonna so just get it over with

Let me simplify the FW/MBV list for you

Every flavor in 18mg 70/30 - 12.5% +/- .25%

That's the only nic/ratio I mix my 75+ FW/MBV flavors in. They all are strong and tasty at 12.5%.

except Sweet Tarts - just say no

I've tried more flavor and less flavor. A few times. 12.5% works great so 12.5% it is.

except Sweet Tarts - just say no

Wow............Just jump right in with the sharks.
What a waste of good flavorings and MONEY.

I have been working with DIY for several months, done hundreds of hours of researching and still only make 5-10ml samples. Things rarely go as planned and you need to KNOW the end results before attempting to mas produce anything.

Remember, if it was so easy, everyone would be doing it at home and no venders would have secret recipes.:)

I like FW flavors on their own, including Graham Cracker, Whipped Cream, Sweet Cream & Pie Crust.
The main MBV thread has a lot of people that mix flavors together and those are some they like to add.
Sweet Tarts might be ok as a mixer but to me it tasted like slightly sweet dust at 12.5%
I bumped it to 15% and it tasted slightly closer to the candy.
I bumped it to 18% and it was still way too weak but not weird.

Just because I don't like it doesn't mean it sucks. It just means I don't like it...
...or it sucks ;)

Yes but do you put nicotine in it yet?

Sincity, when you make your samples, don't put the nic into it until you know you have a workable recipe. It will save you a ton of money.

I wanted a Jolly Rancher Watermelon flavor. Someone said the Sweet Tart helped with that. Someone else gave a different recipe and swore it tasted just like like Jolly Rancher Watermelon. About made me vomit and can't get the stink out of anything it came in contact with. Live and learn.

It's amazing how different peoples' tastes are.
I made juice for someone for a couple of months.
He likes 36mg 80/20 +3 flavor shots.
We started at 12.5%
bumped it to 13.5%
loves it at 14.5%

It tasted like house fire to me. I couldn't distinguish between flavors. Different strokes.

That ST flavor might just make the perfect WM Jolly Rancher for you. Keep us posted.

All due respect, you know better than I do, but I have been through the DIY section and various blogs, and to be honest 2+2=5... its overwhelming with all the information and OPINIONS available here! But this is where we got the procedure we have used. I understand the over flavoring and I will try to dilute a few mixed flavors with VG in the am and steep some more too see what happens. What are we doing wrong in comparison to some of these vape shops that make juice "on the spot" and give it to you and it tastes fine? What do they do sooooo magical, that it is vapeable right away? Maybe the vape shop is not using TFA or is using a combo of brands. Maybe that juice you bought steeped for 2-3 weeks. I understand your frustration---we have all been there. Fruits are pretty easy I am sure it is just too much flavoring. Smaller batches steep faster as well with or without the application of heat.

For easy ready to vape almost instantly low percentage required fruit flavors go to Vaping Zone and looking into the super concentrated alcohol based fruits which need only 2.5% or their Gourmet line of flavors which require 1% or less---makes a beginning DIYers journey alot easier. I bought TFA first DIY and liked 2 of 20 flavors I bought and wanted to give up too. It takes a little patience to find what works best for you.

There is no accounting for taste is there? Sorry. This person just raved about how awesome it was and I thought it was just horrible. I tossed the entire bottle, I mean the bottle along with the batch.

There is definitely a science to this and am grateful people are so willing to share their experiences here because I don't think I'll ever have the knack for tweaking recipes at all beyond the basics.

I'm really not much more advanced than the OP, perhaps just read through the DIY forum a bit more. Wish us both luck, lol.
