The difference is your safety and unless you are very accomplished with building, vaping using a mech is fairly pointless if you are chasing serious wattage.
Most people who don't know what they are doing use a mech to be cool. It's not cool to take risks.
Nor does it vape well unless you are very accomplished with building.

No offense but if you need to ask the difference between box and mech then i don't think you're ready to use a mech mod. Battery safety is of utmost importance while using mechs. And I'm no expert but there are people here who have great blogs about it(@Imfallen_Angel do you? ).And there are threads that explain deeply about battery safety. Some of them are from the battery expert @Mooch as well.
Recommend you to read those before getting close to a mech.
As @djsvapour stated, if you don't know what you're doing you won't like the vape at all. Better go with something you're familiar with... A regulated device.

No offence taken. Fair point.

But that shouldn't stop you from taking up rdas. They're amazing. So much better flavor and clouds from the one time I've tried it.
I'm in a similar situation and just starting to learn about rdas and have researched tons about building coils and battery safety.
Make sure you watch a few videos and read a little. It's not hard at all. And once you learn it. It's very enjoyable and you save tons of money.

Hi Benny & welcome

If you are completely new to vaping you should do some reading first. We can't completely educate you in posts but a nice member here will undoubtedly provide you a few links to start. One of the first things you need to learn about is the difference between MTL (mouth to lung) and DTL (direct to lung) vaping. RDA's are in the DTL type vaping and if that is what you want then no problem otherwise the mod and the atomizer for MTL will likely be different than those for DTL. I like DTL but many here like MTL.

A mech mod is a battery holder with an off/on switch. A regulated mod also has a circuit board and firmware to regulate the current to offer certain important electrical protections to you and the mod. A variable mod takes this a step further giving you the ability to control how much power goes to the atomizer and gives other options such as temperature control, ramp up speed, etc depending on how sophisticated it is. A box mod is any mod in the shape of a box as opposed to say a tube mod.

If you are going to start building your own then go with a variable regulated mod which is what 90% of all mods being sold today are. Using a mech mod can be dangerous if not done properly. Those news stories about vape mods exploding and/or burning are almost always mech mods. As to which mod well I find most operate pretty much the same so for me it comes down to size and number of batteries so I'll let others make recommendations to you.

Battery safety comes down to buying appropriately rated batteries for the application you will use them in and buying them from a vendor that can be trusted to sell you real ones. Fake rewrapped batteries can be dangerous since their ratings can not be trusted so you are never sure if they are appropriate or not. I've used Liion Wholesale but there are others. I'll let others expand on battery safety and give you links to read about it.

RDA's, while I own a few and sometimes use them they are not my forte so I'll leave their recommendation to someone else. My favorite is the Ice Cube 3 but I'm sure there are better recommendations to be made.

Thanks for the help. I'm not new to vaping in general. I've had a few but I want to start getting into the deep end if that makes sense. What would be the best wattage for a mod? Sounds stupid I know but surely it won't need to be over 150?

So what would be the best wattage to go to? For a. Box mod I mean. Any higher than 150?

My mods are either 75w or 200w+ (discounting 'old' mods which were 20/30/50w)

I use the multiple battery mods for battery life not outright power.

Personally, I am enjoying the Smoant Battlestar. I've paired it with an Apocalypse v.2 RDA today, but others see use from time to time.

There is a whole world of choice. I have given up acquiring old-school RDAs (Magma, Plume Veil, tobh etc) and have moved onto newer designs.

My favourite 'deck' to use is the Velocity design but I don't actually enjoy the Velocity.
NaRDA (not great to start on) and Hadaly are both interesting. I bought an OBS Cheetah and can safely call it the most over-engineered piece of junk on the market.
The Petri v.2 sees quite a lot of action. I have a Wotofo Sapor but somehow it's out of favor.

There are pros and cons with all. 4 holes for the 4 wires/2 coils is always going to be easier i.m.o.

A quick-to-remove top cap is my favorite feature. Apocalypse v.2 scores 9/10 on that.... whip off the top, juice up the coils. Ideal.

I think everyone in here did a splendid job at providing you with excellent feedback.

Basically the simplest answer is a regulated mod is like an automatic car, while a mech is the preferred transportation of coyotes when they are chasing a roadrunner. You don't want to hear those "MEEP MEEP!"

Read my blog if you'd like (click my name for the link), it's a work in progress, but I'm aiming at covering most aspects about vaping.

It's not like that at all... the wattage depends completely on your tank/coils/build... you can vape just as well at 10W or 150W, depending on all the different factors and style of vaping.

Personally, I never vape over 45-50w for my daily stuff.

So the apocalypse v.2 is the best in you're opinion? And so 150 should be fine? I was looking at the kangertech box 200 or smok 220

Also would it be best to get a coil build kit?
They do make life easier, but depends on budget...

I have these tools (or similar) that I find excellent: (links provided for examples)

$7.38 Magic Stick CW 6-in-1 Wire Coiling Tool Kit - 1.5+2+2.5+3+3.5+4mm poles / blue at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping

This type of tester that let's you heat your wire is great to have (plus the wired claws for direct wire test is a must-have for me):
$22.55 Multi-function Digital Atomizer Resistance Tester Tool - 0.01-9.9ohm / 0.3-9.9V / USB powered or battery powered at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping

A good screwdriver set (for the HEX and Torx heads)
$9.53 BEST 888A 38 Pieces Chrome-Vanadium Steel Screwdrivers Set at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping

Wire cutters that are decent:
$2.59 PLATO #170 Flush Cutter for Rebuildable Atomizers - max.040" (1mm) dia copper Wire at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping

and a good ceramic tweezer:
$9.55 Nylon + Ceramic Tweezers for E-Cigarettes (5-Pack) 5-pack at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping

That's the basics (and just about everything you'd ever need aside a few extras)

There's not really a 'best' only what suits you. I don't like the clamps that much on the Apocalypse v.2 but they are great at holding fat clapton wires.

150w is kind of theoretical for most vapers. Single battery mods are usually 75w. Double and Triple can go much higher.... If you think you might vape an RDA from 40w-120w then you need a double battery mod.

I find it hard to recommend coil kits, although I did accept (only yesterday) IF you choose the right one at the right price it's not like a rip-off. Some vaping things are junk rip-offs, no question.
$20 on cotton instead of $2 is not worth it.
Premade coils at $5 for a pair is clearly a massive con aimed at certain vapers. Whatever those coils are, they'll be no better than 20 for $1.80 from China.

and..um..no Kanger mods around here.... Kanger mods = zero. Kanger tanks = many.

Thanks for the help. Do I need ALL of the tools in a coil build kit? Or would it be better getting the ones necessary
