The insulators do a couple of things. First, they separate the positively conducting metals from the negatively conducting metals. This is a good thing because if they weren't isolated systems, you would have a bad time. Second, in some they attempt to isolate some the heat produced to just the atty so it doesn't transfer into the mod. There's only so much they can handle though.

I just wanted to clarify what Cullin Kin wrote..

A bad time.. your atty would short. on an decent quality APV, its not as big of a deal.. though you wouldn't get vapors... which is the whole point.
On a mech you could blow your battery, which could end catastrophically... (kaboom goes the mod).

as far as clones goes.. I think all my drippers are clones... I dont vape super low ohm.. usually between .7 and 1.4 and I've never had an issue with the insulator with one caveat..
I had a smoketech squid (or something like that).. it was a piece of garbage. the center pin of the 510 got pushed up a bit by my mod - the 510 center post was the center post on the build deck that was just held in place by some cheap rubber insulators. they weren't a good fit.. i had to push the post down periodically when using the device... It didn't warp or melt as far as I could tell, but it was loose enough to work it self up ( and it would start to spin if I tightened down the positive connection too much..) ... anyway, only used that sucker for a weak before chucking it...
