Just wondering... if we're worried about CC theft with US vendors (since PayPal is not an option), why not just send a check? I'm old enough to remember real mail order... you fill out an order form and send it and a check or money order via snail mail to the vendor. The vendor processes the order and sends it on it's merry way to you. Certainly slower, but would vendors be open to this option? I know I'd probably be more apt to do this than pay for a pre-paid CC. Anybody else?

Most will not accept check. If I have to use a credit card, I purchase a prepaid card and put a couple hundred on it. That way if it does get compromised I do not stand to lose much money.

Only problem with prepaid card is some vendors will not accept them if it can't be registered in your name. Are there pre paid cards that you can actually register for or are they all like gift cards? Sorry but I have no experience with pre paid cards.

Yes, you can register a prepaid card. I get the Mastercard Halogen Green Dot card from Kmart. Works great for me. I use it when a vendor does not accept paypal.

Most cc and debt cards offer loss protection. If my debt card is compromised I'm on the line for $50. It's a good thing to have, but I'm sure its still a hassle. I've researched all the venders I deal with prior to purchases.

I thought only credit cards offered protection are you sure about this?

I had it happen last week, someone got ahold of my debit card info and charged over 400.00 to a cell phone company. One call to my bank: they reversed the charge, cancelled the card and sent me another one...no charge!

I only buy from 3 vendors and have never had a problem- none of them are bottom dwellers, however.
My bank offers the same fraud protection while using my check card, as they do if I use their credit card, so no worries.

Unfortunately, I price compare, however every time I do order from a vendor, I make sure the vendor does use a secure connection, but that's not a guarantee :(

My husband's debit card number got snagged while we were on vacation earlier this year - our bank called us and cancelled his card immediately. $600 was taken, but once we got home and he signed an affidavit saying the charges were fraudulent, we were reimbursed the full amount.
