What worked for me was vaping non-tobacco flavors for a long time. Now when using a tobacco flavor I'm evaluating it strictly on how good it tastes on it own, not compared to a combustible cigarette. A break in the usage allows your taste buds to forget how a cig tastes, helped me...
A real cigarette taste would need to have a burnt vegetable flavor, with a side wet dog.....

I've found most tobacco flavors to be a combination of vanilla, carnal, nuts, grassy, with a touch of anise or other spice. They tend to be not sweet, or creamy or fruity, all a big plus in my opinion.
