Just rebuilt my first one today. Reads out as 1.9 ohm using 2.5mm hollow silica wick and 32g kanthal with 4 wraps.

Problem though... While vapor production is good, it tastes burnt. Not 100% taste of burnt juice. Can't put my finger on it though. Not good at all. I did torch my silica and dry burned before adding the juice in. Even primed it and let the juice soak in. Still tastes like .....

Any ideas?

Dry burning PT/Evod heads can cause the rubber polarity insulator to melt, creating the burnt taste.

Learned this the hard way. Definitely DO torch your kanthal and finished coil, definitely DON'T dry burn, in my opinion.

Yeah, I kinda think it does taste a tad like rubber. Boo. Oh well. Lesson learned. Thanks for that knowledge

I rebuild my protanks at .8 ohms and never had anything on them "melt" during a dry burn, im not saying your wrong riseabovethestorm, im just saying i have never experienced it. Oh and for the op, in my unprofessional opinion the silica is your problem, try switching to cotton.

I'm very novice at building coils. rebuilt a few vivis using cotton. I have PEaches and Cream organic cotton yarn... Will that work for the PT coils?

All is not lost, though. As long as you haven't burnt THROUGH your insulator, you should be able to soak the removed insulating silicone in a vodka bath or hot water, allow to dry, and vape. It should remove the diesel flavor.

It most absolutely will.

Agreed on cotton. I was burning the naked (unwicked) coils before inserting the cotton and was burning the hell out of the insulator. Stopped doing it and now everything is working beautifully.

If the coil is to tight around the wick could be a juice flow issue.
If you have to much flavor wick that can cause wicking issues, which can give you a slight burn taste.
If the draw is a lil tight and vapor production isn't where it should be take out a bit of the top wick.

It takes a few hit's for the new wick to break in. It could be that if it's not a bad burnt or burnt rubber taste.
By 1/3 to half of a tank flavor should come in.

If it's a burnt rubber taste its the grommet on the pin. Several possible causes, coil to far down in the base so it's to close to it, a hot leg causing scorching or having your pin mashed in to far pushing the grommet to close to the coil.

Check the coil is it firing evenly or do you have a hot spot on either end?
Is your coil even with the grove in the base for the wick or is it pushed down?
Is the grommet mashed by the pin?
You can clip off the upper lip of the grommet to shorten it just a tad.

Overheating on dry burning can scorch the grommet, lighten up on the fire button as it does it's work and let it cool down a bit between blasts.

I'll tear it apart again tomorrow after work. Too close to bed time now. Honestly, it probably is too close to the bottom, I did pull kind of tight. I put in a new stock coil to tide me over until then.

Oh, if your not holding your tongue right, biting lip incorrectly. or don't get the swear words in the right order those can mess with it too :p

Also be sure you squint your eyes, furrow your brow and hold your breath to keep the shakes to a minimum.

contact coils

each coil lends it's heat to the next due to close proximity. thus the entire coil heats from the center outward instead of the legs under the rubber grommet getting hot.

Just rebuilt my Protank head. First coil ever for me. It vapes like a champ! A 3.3 ohm champ..... Forgot to take a picture. 6 or 7 wrap micro coil with 32 gauge kanthal, cotton yarn for a wick, one flavor wick cause I was concerned it would leak without it. My point is, it can be done. Now I need to invest in some thicker wire. The coil is to damn small! The ohms are to damn high!

OMG that is a thing of beauty! I hope to one day make them that nice. Mine look like a hot mess, but they have been working. That one looks like a well machined spring. Very nice!

I use 32 g kanthal 6/5 wraps comes in right around 2.0-2.2 every time.
I use an old tongue ring stud that long ago had the design wear off.
Sounds odd but makes a pretty, smooth, tight coil :).

I'm gonna start using a spare 20ga blunt syringe needle that I bought for my juice bottles ages ago.

I use a 14 gauge blunt syringe needle to wrap micro coils on.

I do anneal the 30 gauge kanthal before I wrap which takes out some of the springiness and make wrapping a little easier.

TRICK: Leave the needle in the coil until AFTER you lock the legs down. REALLY helps in keeping the coil straight and prevents pulling it too far down into the hole.
