I just purchased rebuild supplies and can't wait so I have been tearing apart my old bad heads looking for a way to rebuild it. I am planning on trying a chimney coil surrounded by wick. Anyone figured out a good way to remove the press fit piece at the bottom of the head?

Also am I the only person getting HUGE differences in build quality on these heads? Out of a 5 pack 3 were made where the inner wick sock was not touching the wick inside the coil on one side of the top coil. This results in getting a dry hit taste off the top coil while the head gurgles. The bottom coil stays plenty wet. Anyway this is the reason I want to try a single coil chimney build.

Tried a chimney build and let's just say it was much easier going through the steps in my head then actually doing it.

Tried the original sleeve then removed it and tried a mesh sleeve instead.
Tried a a chimney coil with the upper lead going from the outside then passed it through the coil.
But the real problem is placing the wick in.
In a vertical build you use the coil to lead the wick in place, but in this kind of build you have to place the coil then push the wick in from the side, or wrap the coil with the wick and then push them both down.
Both are quite hard to accomplish.

Actually while I'm writing this i'm thinking of another way that could be viable: remove the sleeve and foam, make the coil, wrap the cotton around it, wrap the cotton in mesh, try to make an edge with the mesh below the coil and the cotton so it will hold them in place, make sure the edge doesn't touch any of the leads, then push the damn thing down through the head.

Thanks a ton for replying. I have a tip that may help. The bottom of the head is pressed in place. Take a screw with a head small enough to fit down through the top of the head with all the guts ripped out. The screw needs to have a head big enough to grab the edge of the bottom from the inside. Then grab a socket or small metal tube that will not allow the ridge below the feed holes to pass. Then screw the screw into a piece of wood. This will pull the pressed piece out allowing you to build the coil/wick. To reassemble put the head bottom side up on the socket and tap the bottom ring back in place then install the rubber insulating gasket and bottom pin.

Ideally I want the coil to have nothing in the middle and be wrapped in cotton. I am waiting for Kanthal in the vape mail, so I have not done it yet. What do you think about cutting a small piece from the tube in a ball point pen to use as a retainer/ spacer to keep air flow?

Rip Tripper's vid is a horizontal build and this is a vertical build, not the same thing at all.
In other words, Rip's build is sick as .... and this build is just sick:)

I got one done at 1.9ohm it is a touch too narrow so air flow is not what I want. I does work though. The top leg is folded over the wick no shorts just tighter than wanted draw and a touch of gurgling.
