id stick with wrapping your kanthal around a 2mm widget of some sort now, a micro coil is (from what ive read) 1.6mm or so...

i have dome some coils lately too and im just kinda sticking with making them and seeing how they perform to start out....i use 30g kanthal wire, make about 9 turns....seems to come out ok....less turns means lower ohms so it gets HOT quick...but then its also really awful battery life too. its bad enough with these 9 turn coils lol.

i have some notes in my blog entry about Kanger heads saying what extra tools I snagged to make doing coils easier....cheap stuff from Harbor Freight, but its useful (for me...one is big magnifying glass w/ LED so I can see up super duper close).

Yeah I might need to invest in a magnifying glass myself hah. I currently use 100% cotton yarn, boil it twice for 30 minutes each. Then I use a 4-40 mechanic screw and use that to pre-wrap my wire through the screw grooves. Once I have enough wraps I'll use a lighter to heat up the wire on the screw ( makes it firmer ) and then unscrew my wire and use a needle ( I built my own using some of the kanthal wire ) and squeeze the wick through it. I find that really helpful.

Looks like you have some sound information already. I, too, recommend sticking with standard coil wraps until you get comfortable with it. It may turn out that you don't "need" to get into micro/nano coils to meet your vaping needs.

As a general rule though, the best way to figure out if something will work for you, or what is best, is to experiment and find out based on your own criteria. Vaping is, after all, a very personal experience, and what is "best" for one person, may be worthless to the next. As always ... YMMV!

Nano coils(<18gauge diameter) I think work best on beds...wick directly underneath coil. The coil is so small, it tends to just burn the liquid. I don't use deciohm coils, or really low resistances, so it may work better with less wire.

Micro coils(>=18 gauge diameter), after trying them, I haven't messed with spaced coils. I don't think it can get much better than a perfectly wicked micro.

Both are compressed to where the coils touch each other. Very easy to build, and re-wicking doesn't cause any problems by screwing up the coil.

Well, I would go against the flow and say start with a microcoil and cotton. Easy to coil and it lasts for a looooooong time. You only have to dry burn and rewick with cotton periodically.

A standard coil can last a long time too, but the wick will get gunked up after a while and no amount of dry burning will get rid of it.

The only pitfall with microcoil and cotton is that in the beginning, it MIGHT take a bit of experimenting to find the right amount of cotton to use.

For my PT2's I wind 9 turns of 30ga. A-1 kanthal on a 1/16" arbor....and get 1.9-2.0 ohms....
As long as the coils are nice and tight....they don't short out on the chimney post when re-assembling....
An alternative is 6-7 turns of 32ga. on a 3/64" arbor....this should yield ~ 2.0 ohms also....
Good Luck!
Happy (vaping) Trails!
