With pics!

I rebuilt an Aero coil yesterday into a single microcoil! I have to say it works great and I like it much better than stock! The flavor and vapor production are just as good and there is no delay in heating up like there is with the dual coils. I vaped with it quite a bit yesterday evening and left it overnight to make sure it wouldn't leak while sitting idle for hours. I'm happy to say I've yet to get a gurgle, flood or dry hit.

Here's a few pics...

So the details... 30 gauge, 8 wraps, 2mm ID, 2.2 Ohms, sterile cotton ball wick. (edit: I'm vaping 65/35 pg/vg MBV strawberry)

The biggest trick was getting a 2mm coil in the correct position as a 2mm micro screwdriver would not fit in the channels to hold the coil in place as I installed the insulator and pin. I also worried about wicking a coil that is wider than the channels. On my PT2 coil builds I use a 1.4mm screwdriver that fits between the channels perfectly to hold the coil. However I felt a 1.4mm would be to small to replace a dual coil.

So here's what I did...

Wrapped the coil, torched it and got it as perfect as I could make it.
Twisted a wisp of cotton very tight and threaded it through the loose coil
Feed the leads into the head and used the cotton to hold the coil in a good position
Inserted the insulator and pin and made a few tiny adjustments to center the coil
Clipped the cotton and fluffed it up with a tiny micro screwdriver. (the pictures above look like the coil is stuffed tight but it's really just fluffy!)
Tested the coil with a multimeter, Ohms meter and sigelei Zmax (all gave the reading of 2.2 Ohms) I just wanted to ensure there were no shorts or anomalies.

It vapes great and I love it!

Looks good, and welcome to rebuilding PT coils! You may want to check this thread, if you haven't already: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/clearomizers/486794-protank-microcoil-discussion.html

To my mind, it looks like a little too much cotton in the coil. You're obviously right to fluff the ends, and they look good. But your wick looks to have some slight "shoulders" coming out of the coil - and remember, cotton swells. This can lead to poorer performance, though not necessarily bad performance. For your next build, I'd suggest using less cotton, or else twisting the amount you have a bit more firmly, so that it slides through the coil a bit easier (pre-soak, that is).

Hope this helps

Thanks!

I've actually been rebuilding PT2 coils, RDA's and a Kayfun for months. I'd say I'm fairly experienced at it. Have no doubt it's the right amount of cotton.

I posted this thread because I've read that people have rebuilt an Aero with a single coil but I've yet to see anyone explain how they did it or post any pictures of the results.

Ah right - well, you know what works best for you then - ignore my comments! :)

Anyway, hopefully this thread helps someone else!

That's great! I just rebuilt a couple of mine for the first time the other day. I found a 1.8mm jewellers screwdriver fit perfectly into that slot so you could easily keep the coil in perfect position. 30g kanthal, 12 wraps on 1.8 id got me 2.2ohms also for my microcoil in my Aerotank.

Nice I'll remember that, a 1.8 mm screwdriver fits! Thanks!
