Well, of course you need to get the wicks saturated, by tilting the tank etc. as you normally do when using top coil clearos.
Apart from that, when I used Novas and had either cleaned a coil or fitted a new one, I would take off the rubber thingy that sits on top of the coil (you know, the one with the metal thingy in it :p), and add a drop of e-liquid straight down in to the coil and wick, to "kickstart" the wicking.
Also, if it's the "new coil taste" you're referring to, you can get rid of a lot of that taste, by running your kanthal through a torch/lighter flame, until it glows red, a couple of times. The same applies for your wick, here you'll want to either use a torch, or the blue part of a lighter flame (the bottom of the flame). The yellow part of the flame (the top of it), will turn your wick black.
