Someone mentioned my name?

But seriously, the only type of torch I ever use is the type I used to take my Avatar picture (yes, that IS me! And, yes, that IS using a single flashlight, not car headlights!)

LOL

When I first saw this thread title, I immediately thought: FLASHLIGHTS!

Recently ordered a few P60 style drop-in Solarforce hosts to add to my little growing collection. Blue/Red/Green P4 Cree's and a UV to drop in them. No real reason, other than I saw one of those Nitecore chameleon series in person, thought it would be amusing to own some colored lights, and wanted dedicated ones that were far brighter and superior throwers at a much cheaper price. Really silly and superfluous purchase. Though I do think it will be funny if when the power goes out in my hood, I bust out of my apartment and just start pacing up and down the block with a crazy Blue flashlight. :D

Outside of thinner wire like 32g, anything 28g and thicker barely benefits, if at all, from torching. The main purpose for torching before wrapping was to make wrapping easier, but 28g and thicker isn't very springy at all so it's not needed. The other purpose of torching is to tighten micro-coils, which you can do by simply firing the coil un-wicked after it's installed.

In summery: save your money, buy a bic lighter if anything...

Once you get a pencil torch you'll never go back to a Bic Lighter Thats if You carefully follow the refill instructions or not depending on the quality of the instructions you get. I found I had had to insert refill can tip into torch refill nozzle and the flip so can was ontop of torch[Gravity?] Really depends on how often you use micro coils or SS Cable and Mesh- Torch does a better job quicker and easier well worth parting with $20 for a pencil torch and butane refill canister

compressing your micro coil with a ceramic tweezers and torch it glowing Red then let cool will holding it compressed just makes life easier. I have a Micro Torch from Amazon also- hint buy high Quality Butane Refill do not skimp here as it will make your torch last longer and preform better

I'll second that. I blame low quality butane that my employer provided for ruining a rather expensive Mac Tools butane soldering iron.

Now, I will only use Ronson, which I've never had trouble with.

I used to use a torch until I found these Genuine Lightning Vapes Ceramic Tweezers - Heat Resistant - Pointed - - Amazon.com. You can find them elsewhere, but you wanted Amazon or ebay..... Nice thing about these is you can fire the coil while squeezing it tight.... and they're a lot smaller and easier to use in public places than a torch. I always got weird looks when I pulled the torch out in public.... doesn't everyone carry one around with them

Yeah, I use one of those while at work too but it burns through anything thinner than 30 gauge! ;)

Sent from Stoooopidtalk!

That's odd, I don't use 32 so much any more but always had better luck just using a simmer burner than an actual torch.

In any case I really like to cook, just not sure I'd like to do it for a living.

There's a whole boatload of mini torches, bernzomatic style, on fasttech for about $2. I was going to throw one of those on my next order to see if they're any good. Worth the gamble.

I have a $2 from SlowTech, worth it. It works and was inexpensive.

I love my job and I'm great at it, but better to keep cooking as a hobby than a career...

You can also get "jet-style" cigarette lighters at most convenience stores for maybe $4. These work the same as the FT torches.
I got mine at CVS (back in the old days....)

A jet lighter will have a ring of small holes around the tip (where the butane comes out). They usually have the word "jet" somewhere on the package.

If you want a great P60 drop-in, you gotta go for a Malkoff...

Yes, ceramic coated tweezers can be sweet if you can get your hands on them. I still have to get a hold of some...

I got "lucky" and snagged them and a set of replacement tips off of Fasttech when they were in stock. I've found the needle-tipped ones to be really no better than the "normal" fine-point tweezers I already had (because I've never used them on a firing coil, only for tweaking and pulling wicks), but the flat ones are really nice for touching up coils.

I've seen a few vape shops on line have started carrying them, and they're showing up on Ebay as well.
