Hey there. I’m looking at getting another mech. Seeking recommendations for something that is relatively maintenance free and also hits hard.

In the past I’ve owned a Brass Able, aluminum Roundhouse v1 and a copper v2, and a copper SOI v1. The Able hit really nicely but cleaning it on the regular was a bit of a PITA. The Roundhouse v2 didn’t hit all that hard - the SOI was noticeably better.

What’s out there these days that’s nice? I’m considering a midnight AV timekeeper, but worried about it not hitting well.

I personally find that aluminium requires a lot of maintenance.

Look for a SS body and silver plated contacts. I’d also recommend a mod where the break in the circuit is not at the battery itself. Something like the SOI where there is constant contact with the battery.

Your best bet is to do a thorough clean then use an anti-oxidant to prolong the time between cleaning. I use a small amount of di-electric grease, others have good luck with deoxit gold. The idea is to protect all mechanical contact points in the circuit from oxygen and arcing.

Agree with the constant battery contact. I first noticed this back when I used a JA Victoria tube (first mech I owned with this contact configuration. No arcing.

Since then I found a nice clone of the calvert mech on fasttech. Similar contact setup that needs only a little bit of polish now and then since it is copper. But the switch is a one piece design that is held on by magnets. Simplest design and easiest mech to maintain that I've ever used and hits great. Love the way the switch works too - very unique and different from the typical plunger designs. It has become one of my favorite mechs even though it is a clone and I have a bunch of authentics to compare it to.

Take a look at the Armageddon MFG Grip mod. They’ll be available ceracoated soon I’m sure. It would require routine maintenance, but it’s design features some elements that I think conform to your desires. It’s pricey, but if you’re looking at AV, it’s in your ballpark.

The Grip Pre-order

Mechs all need lots of maintenance and cleaning. 'Hard hitting' ones will often need the most, if they don't get it they stop doing so.
Not really, all my MCV Mech's like the Elite and Raptor G2 are super easy to clean and maintain. Also my Subzero Shorty's, Rig, 2JNT Pilak's and others are simple to clean and maintain. There are a few that are a PiA which are the old school Mech's.

Ya, it may take some maintenance - buts it’s just so purty. Hits well enough, and I wanted something a bit different. Got #0041!

Still considering adding a SS Black Timekeeper to the Collection...

It doesn't use a hybrid top, does it?
I think all AV mods are "fauxbrid" style. It's touted as a "cloud-sport device", "for non-nicotine use only" and "for professional use only." I can't imagine it's anything but pinless.

What is this mech?
Here's a clone of it: $20.50 AV Saturn Styled Hybrid 18650 Mechanical Mod w/ Saturn Cap - brass / 1*18650 at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping. Looks pinless, to me. Course, that doesn't mean the original also is, but see my previous comment. I still bet it is. [Edit: I found a video of the original. Can't link it because it's full of swear words but, yeah, it is a pinless style.]

If required cleaning maintenance (subject line of OP) is the issue, look at stainless tube mech mod's with the least amount of parts overall.

For those that would argue S/S is not as conductive as xxxx material ..., one must objectively consider the overall mass of the conductive material electricity is passing through (massive for the amount of current and relatively short distance of travel). Or, perhaps as I have done, physically measure voltage drop of two comparable mech's (copper vs. S/S) in side-by-side comparison at typical power used to vape.

Quick search in the subject reflected in this very old thread may provide a little more insight:

SS is simple to maintain, I've got a few with Silver contact and spring upgrades, they hit very, very well

I recommend something made of aluminium for you - it wont hit quite as hard as copper/brass but it will not require the maintenance :)

threading on aluminum mods do require lots of maintenance

maybe a true hybrid? less threading to worry about, if you can find a Ruby V1 (i find them to hit harder than any v2) used go for it

i also swear by my rig v3 WITH a roundhouse v2 25 mm (the 2 post one)

i have a descendant and an outlaw both with kennedy toppers and other than removing patina on the tube for looks have done nothing else on them

Actually aluminum hits much better than Brass. The conductivity scale is

Silver
Copper
Gold
Brass is way down the list

Best hitting Mod's I have are 2JNT Pilak's. Then f following them up are my Mod's that have 92+% pure silver contacts.

If you have the money 2JNT Pilak's, pure silver not only is the best for conductivity but is very easy to maintain.

For some reason I thought brass was just below copper...stupid me :p I don't find aluminium to require anywhere near as much maintenance as brass (nor copper presumably although I don't own any copper mechs) nonetheless and its so light it feels odd going back to brass.
