When I was contemplating my first order I thought about getting an auto battery to better replicate that analog experience. After reading up on the subject I went with a manual instead and couldn't be happier. It's really a minor thing to push the button and you get much better control over your vaping.

You could always get an auto to try (batteries are pretty cheap), but I think you'll like the manual once you try it.

The 510 is one of the most popular e-ciga for a reason. It's small size and quality of vapor make it an easier transition from analogs. Manual batteries sound like a drawback to most beginners but are very easy to use and get used to. I just got a Luci automatic battery from my mother-in-law because I wanted an auto for driving so I didn't have to fumble with the button, but autos do take some hard sucking to trigger (yeah, sounds raunchy doens't it?).

Bigger units, like Egos or Tornados are generally just upgrades once you've made the switch off of analogs.

I started with m401 m402 and m403 auto batts. Its a fine model to start with, and to continue using for a some time if you ask me. I personally like the super-mini size of the 403 and the super convenience of the auto-batts. That combination is a great facsimile to smoking which really helped me make the transition. But even still, after having made the transition, the auto-batts are great. I drive a manual transmission and i like to vape while i drive, imagine shifting, while turning a corner, while taking a drag with a manual batt... awkward.

With any model, there will be a learning curve in which you'll learn the ins and outs of your model in particular but also of vaping in general, much of which will apply to any model ecig or mod or what have you (atty maintenence, cart filling procedures, charging stations, VG vs PG preferences, flavor preferences).

Yeah I might buy an auto battery just for driving because I also drive a manual transmission car.

I drive a manual car and have a manual ecig too...city driving is a bit difficult, especially when the phone rings! Throw in the morning coffee and I'm a mess. I never thought I would love hitting all of the red lights....

One thing to remember about the auto battery is that they can go off even when not used by loud sounds. Say you are some place and the music is half way loud....the auto battery will light up and any juice will vaporize.....it will make it nasty for you the next time you go to take a drag on it.

I have had both kinds and find that I take only my manuals when I go out and I use the auto batteries at home.

Good luck and happy vaping!!!!!!!

I have an auto 401 that would activate with the wind. Loud sounds were an issue also

I also have manual m401 batts for use depending on the situation. But provided the circumstances are auto batt friendly, I still prefer the autos.

The OP was asking for recommendations for a first ecig. I would recommend some kind of auto battery independent of which atomizer is used. Its just a bit more like smoking an analog, and that helped me make the transition. I would also recommend a model with the option for a manual battery too, for use in loud or windy environments, and for use with dry burning under performing attys back to life.

I wouldn't recommend jumping straight to bigger battery MODs, but I think many/most people eventually get there :)

Whats the m401 like? Maybe I will get one of those for when I'm driving rather than an auto battery for my 510 that I just bought.

If you've already got 510 stuff and like it and how it works (size, cart filling, vapor, flavor and such), might as well spring for 510 auto batts for it rather than getting the whole schemeal (attys, chargers, cases, etc) for 40x stuff too.

I've only used m40x stuff, so I've got a very limited point of view and some of what i'm about to type comes from reading this forum rather than first hand experience... but to answer "whats the m401 like" question...

Its a very efficient ecig model. The batteries tend to last longer than others, it seems to me because the system (batt+atty) is arranged to consume less power than some other models. This also means it runs thru liquid more slowly, and the cart size is somewhat smaller than other models (too small really, but aren't they all). But that efficiency comes at a cost. It doesn't produce as much vapor as some other models. Then again, it doesn't scorch or burn liquid as easily as some other models either. I've read that the 401 is better for flavor while the 510 is better for vapor and throat hit. (I suspect thats pretty much a function of power consumption). I've read that some people prefer the 401 for fruit/desert flavors and the 510 for tobacco/coffee flavors.

It has an exposed bridge atomizer design. While this is not so good for "dripping" (you can drip but its more tedious), its perfect for "dipping" (which pretty much can't be done without an exposed bridge). I use a contact lens case for dipping.

The battery size options are pretty nice: small (403), medium(402) and large(401). The smallest is the same size as an analog cig. The medium, slightly smaller than a 100. The largest being 108mm long. There is a nice PCC available for it (in two sizes one for the 401/402 and another for the 402/403).

My favorite to use is the 403 really... so small and light.

Parts are readily available from a lot of online retailers, including "XL" carts.

One thing that bugs me is how few MODs have an option to use the m40x atty on it. Of course there are thread adapters that can remedy that.

If I had to do it all over again, I might start with the KR808D model and cartomizers for the larger capacity and convenience of not having to refill carts as often or clean attys. I'm going to get a Chameleon soon, after that I'll finally give other attys and cartomizers a whirl.

I started with the 510 and added an M402 right away. I really like them, especially the PCC and I found it ideal for driving. Two carts and one battery would take care of the commute. The carts are small, but I find they wick to the last drop without the need for mods (YMMV). These days though I use the KR8 for driving and the M40x for those times I feel like I want to hold a "real" cigarette.
