In that case, you're looking at single 18650 battery mods, my young padawan.
There are a variety in today's burgeoning market. You are spoilt for choice.
Let me furnish a few examples for your procurement consideration. I personally use these myself.
The legendary Subox mini. Of course, who hasn't heard about this legendary starter kit. The Communist of them all. Vaping for the masses. The October Revolution. Mao Zedong's Long March. All the Subox has been a witness to in history. Comes with a tank to get you started.
If you intend to go a little deeper, there's the Sigelei 75W TC. Built like a PLA armoured division. This tank will roll over you before you can say "bourgeoisie". Full featured and reliable, with precise firing and the robustness of a trusty hand-grenade. (With none of the explosion risk!)
If you want something exquisite, like a family heirloom piano, or a bespoke watch, there's the Smok Treebox. Also a 75W TC device, it is carved out of exotic Brazilian zebrawood for a feel like no other. Divine, I tell you. Definitely something you would pass down to your succeeding generations.

Don't get the d2. Wait for the d3 to come out in December as that has a proper step-down.
I would recommend a vt40 or a evic vtc mini. Haha both have proper step down and they looks compact and nice. Feels good in the hands too.

Think it boils down to your budget and any specific functions that you want? TC? High Wattage? Box mod, Tube mod?
Personally I've tried from starter kits to those higher ends mod and tanks, it really make a difference between the 2 range.
For starter kits, I find SuBox Mini is great to start your vaping experience. When you need to upgrade later to a higher end range, there are also many options for you like VS rDNA40, Vapor Flask, Provari Radius, Provari P3 Ti, coupled with high end tanks like Kayfun V4, Taifun GT2, Russian 91% etc etc...
You will be pampered with many choices in the market out there.
