Congratulations! I agree with bombastinator. It's hard to make specific predictions, but you've made a great decision that will pay off.

For me, things improved rather gradually and I didn't notice for a few months. By the time I noticed the improvement, it was a lot better and had been for quite some time. I'm inclined to say that things should start getting better between immediately and within a week or so of reaching zero cigarettes, but I don't have any proper evidence to base that on.

Welcome and congrats! I smoke for 40 years... up to a pack a day when I started vaping. That got me down to 5 cigs a day for awhile. Then I woke up one day and thought "I can do this!" Sure, I do break down once in a while, but really like vaping and don't miss the smell, morning cough and have saved lots of money! It's been 3-4 months now and my lungs feel great! Even after one month I felt much better. Keep at it.

I personally had been smoking for 30 years, 2PAD when I quit, but 1 PAD for most of the 30. I also smoked a variety of other stuff too.
I switched in about 3 weeks, It took three weeks of vape only after that, and for about a week, I was coughing up what appeared to be VG, but what I knew to be phlegm. After that, I was experiencing weekly gains in lung function,i tapered some, but still getting better half a year later. Hth, ymmv.

I smoked 1.5 pad for over 30 years and been vaping now for 8 years . I haven't had a cig in all that time and never ever will. Honestly I dont remember time frames exactly, but I'm thinking 6 months and I felt better, but for all my coughing , out of breath deal, taking weeks for my chest to recover after a cold or flue, took a few years for that.

It should also be pointed out that the process of your body ejecting years of cigarette junk and getting used to its absence can produce some weird and wack symptoms all by itself. That junk can also mask other problems you already had, so quitting smoking can (very rarely) appear to actually cause some problems sometimes. Generally it doesn’t. It just makes them visible.

Depends. Many go through the "cough cleanse." A period of coughing while your lungs clear the tar. Happened to me a couple of those times I quit, but not when I quit for good with vaping.

If you call breathing improvement the ability to wake up, laugh, breathe deep without coughing, it'd be right after the coughing period. Not sure I really remember when I noticed increased lung capacity, but that first month I was more focused on staying away from smoking. I'm thinking it was probably within 6-8 weeks. But regardless, it'll happen. Then you'll notice you don't stop on the treadmill, walking, biking, or whatever, because you're out of breath, but because your body is tired. And that's frickin awesome. One of the many benefits, so stick with it!

Hey Ghost...does it really matter?

Days after you quit smoking you'll notice that your breath/body/clothes/car/home will no longer stink...

And within a week you'll notice that your whole body feels much better...

So...is it that important how long, exactly, your breathing (specifically) improves???

I felt my best after 3 months, I could really tell a difference,..
I use to get bronchitis every other month smoking the nasty, It's been almost 2 yrs. & no coughing or bronchitis ! ...Yay ! ...Let's all Vape To No More Nasties !

I've finally found a good enough reason to quit smoking entirely for my vaping mod. It's not that hard, but I'm wondering if anyone has thoughts on if and when my breathing may improve. Any comments please. My reason to quit is for bike riding.

Was it hard to quit?
I had some rough days where I had a strong urge to smoke but I was highly motivated to quit so I just vaped until I got nic sick. Those days got fewer as time went on.

I'd wouldn't say it was easy but it was much easier than cold turkey or the patch.

I think a lot depends how "in shape" you are. Even though I smoked for 30 years I was very active during this time. I ride mountain bikes, play hockey, play drums, etc. I did all this side by side with smoking. Some people are not active, quit smoking, and then decide to be active. That transition can be hard because your not just fighting the quiting, your fighting out of shape.

That transition can be hard because your not just fighting the quiting, your fighting out of shape.
This was the problem of several athletes who died of cancer from smoking. There’s footage of i believe Jesse Owens? Back around ww2 running around the track while lighting up. Lung cancer just gets you faster if you’re a deep breather.

Getting back in shape if you’re out of it can be even worse than quitting smoking weird malady wise. Plus there’s age. Hit even 30 and it’s twice as hard. Hit 40 and it’s 4 times harder. Building muscle mass is literally about damaging muscles and rehealing them. That’s how it is supposed to work, but testosterone plays a big part in healing. Getting in shape after 40 makes you hurt in places you didn’t even know you had. Still worth it but it can be an eye opener.

Most athletes smoked like most Americans did back in the day. I have a dvd showing the Boston Bruins at practice with cigs in their mouths skating around the ice. Kind of funny.
