I also fill mine when the juice level is between ¼ and ½. Also, when I see it is getting low. Otherwise, I will forget and then get that dry hit and have to replace my wick and clean the tank.

On tanks with drop in coil head I always refilled when the juice gets below the juice ports on the coil.
My rebuildable tank (RTA) I top off when the juice goes below my cotton.
If I'm driving I need an alarm other than the taste-o-meter. My Falcons can go through 5ml before I realize it. Fortunately they get almost bone dry before the taste-o-meter activates. By then I'm usually at a place where I can refill or change tanks.
One time when my dad was in a hospital a nurse asked him what he would do if he ran out of gas crossing a bridge. His reply was "I'll never run out of gas crossing a bridge because I make sure I had enough before crossing it".
