Standard are more durable, easier to clean. Most likely becuase their smaller size. Ive seen life expectancy similar across the board though. I can kill an XL just as quick as I can a standard though. The true difference is just cartridge size. The performance is the same, as I believe the coil is same size across the board. You just refil less with XL, and need a sham wow to soak up leaks on XL atties. But once you figure out their mannerisms, its smooth sailing, and simply a preference.

I use and espresso steamer myself. It helps to keep them clean if your looking for longevity. Alcohol soak can work also. Usually every few days..some do it nightly and let it dry overnight. I rarely clean mine though. I kill atties in 2 weeks regardless. BUt thats just me, and I seem to be unlucky in that regard. A simple rinse under some warm water daily should keep it going strong for long term. Their are also plenty of videos on you tube if ya need some visual instruction. ;)
Cleaning will keep the coil clean and performing better, longer. If it gets gunked up, you take longer draws, and stress the coil more, and it eventually just gives up the ghost....but that will happen regardless. Keeping it clean will give a better experience over the life of the atty.
