Besides toxins, chemicals and carcinogens in cigarettes, heavy metals are present. To be specific, cadmium, lead and polonium. Lead and polonium are radioactive. Whether or not you currently smoke analogs, you can successfully remove heavy metals and other toxins from your body. Even though your blood replaces itself every 120 days, heavy metals are stored in body tissues – yes, even the brain.

Cilantro has been proven to chelate toxic metals from our bodies in a relatively short period of time.

For tons of information, google cilantro chelation therapy. Chelation (pron. kee-lay-shun). The recipes and method I’m sharing below is inexpensive, effective and delicious (IMO).

Below are two recipes. They can be added to if you want to – getting the cilantro into the body is key here – not the other ingredients. Also, If you don’t like cilantro, cilantro chelation capsules are available from vitacost.com. BTW, liquid stevia (stevia rebaudiana) with just deionized water and vegetable glycerin is also available here if you use it to sweeten your tobacco flavors.

From the book Lessons from the Miracle Doctors, by Jon Barron:

Cilantro Pesto
1 cup fresh cilantro
6 tablespoons olive oil
1 clove garlic
½ c. almonds, cashews or other nuts
2 tablespoons lemon juice

Blend to a lumpy paste. Add a little hot water if necessary. Eat a couple of teaspoons a day for three weeks to clean out the heavy metals. Repeat 2 or 3 times a year. Be careful; it tastes incredible and is addictive. (Note: the pesto freezes nicely, so you can make several batches at once.)

Dr. David Williams’ recipe:

Cilantro Chelation Pesto
4 cloves garlic
1/3 cup Brazil nuts
1/3 cup sunflower seeds
1/3 cup pumpkin seeds
2 cups packed fresh cilantro (aka coriander, Chinese parsley)
2/3 cup flaxseed oil
4 tablespoons lemon juice
2 tsp dulse powder (seaweed from a health food store)
Sea salt to taste

Process the cilantro and flaxseed oil in a blender until the coriander is chopped. Add the garlic, nuts and seeds, dulse and lemon juice and mix until the mixture is finely blended into a paste. Add a pinch of sea salt to taste and blend again. Store in dark glass jars if possible. It freezes well, so purchase cilantro in season and fill enough jars to last through the year.

Combined with the benefits of the other ingredients, this recipe is a powerful tissue cleanser. Two teaspoons of this pesto daily for three weeks is purportedly enough to increase the urinary excretion of mercury, lead, and aluminum, thus effectively removing these toxic metals from our bodies. We can consider doing this cleanse for three weeks at least once a year. The pesto is delicious on toast, baked potatoes, and pasta.

Also of note, another natural chelator is malic acid. Malic acid is found in fresh apples and apple cider vinegar. Malic acid is particularly useful in removing aluminum from the body. Source: Lessons from the Miracle Doctors, by Jon Barron.

There is so much wrong with the information on Google regarding how chelation even works. :( It would take me two and a half pages to even start with why this isn't plausible.

But the bottom line is this: Chelation is dangerous, people die because of it, and it's not something that should be undertaken lightly at home. If you feel you must chelate, please, please call a doctor.

The only positive thing I can say is that Cilantro probably doesn't do much in the way of Chelation, so it's should be safe. Also, eating the concoctions above will give you some good fiber in the bowels which might help clean them out.

So long as you're a healthy adult, your body is more than capable of eliminating heavy/toxic metals from the bloodstream with no external agents. The most effective chelation you can do is to drink plenty of water and eat well. The water and good eats will keep your kidneys and bowels working in peak condition for maximum removal of any toxic metals.

Chelation therapy removes metals from the system. ALL metals. The good ones and the bad ones. (Sulfur is not picky about what it binds with) If you plan to chelate, you have to supplement essential minerals that your body is now losing to chelation. Just for instance, if you lose too much Calcium, your brain can no longer send signals to the body, your heart stops, and you die.

So, this entire theory is based on one study performed on Vietnameese Noodle Soup? And now it's been picked up by a bunch of "natural health" practitioners and touted as great? Noone's even sure exactly how Cilantro works...

How does it work? Most likely, Cilantro is a sulfur rich food. Sulfur has a higher affinity for metals than blood. Metals are attracted to the sulfur, are pulled into the bowels and is excreted with stool.

However, with other sulfur based oral chelators (EDTA), it was found that only about 5% makes it out of the gut. The problem was the time necessary to digest, and I can only imagine that the number would be even lower for Cilantro. The other %95 of the chelating compounds bound with nutrients in the stomach making them pass with stool.

EDTA binds tightly to trace metals, depriving bacteria of the essential nutrients they need to grow. For oral chelation this means that you need to supplement the gut flora with probiotics, prebiotics... And your crap is going to stink to high heaven.

I love Cilantro. If you want to eat a ton of the stuff I won't complain. But it's not a miracle chelator. The science to support such a claim is nil. After googling the "theory" behind it, I'm amazed at some of the claims made by it's adherents. Complete Chelation in two weeks with no chance of overdose? It crosses the Blood Brain Barrier? Where is the study? What is the active chemical that crosses the BBB?

You want to do yourself some good, get 64oz. of water everyday, and eat healthy. A Multi-Vitamin in the morning is also recommended. Heck, that Vitamin C is a known chelator.

The best detox I know of is a hot bath using salt from The Dead Sea. Also replaces good minerals like magnesium. They can be expensive, but the expensive ones aren't usually the best. Get it from the most enriched part of The Dead Sea and in it's raw unprocessed form. You can actually feel it pulling out the toxins in your body like a Dyson!!!
