Not even close to fitting in a cup holder. I have the small model ..34 ounce. The big brother holds 52 ounces. I mostly run water in it, no flavor, no nic.

Flashlights. Fenix PD32 with an LD01 for back up. Don't know how I ever got by without 'em. Kinda like my REO. 
Any smart phone and especially Samsung Galaxy Note 2. Screen big enough to substitute for tablet; reading books, documents, internet, movies. With the 9K mAH battery it can go days without charging.
Not saying it's more important than toilet paper or car but they aren't gadgets. Electrical power, in any form, is right up at top of non gadget list, though.

For me it's definitely some sort of computer whether it's a laptop, desktop, tablet or phone. Whatever keeps me "connected". At home I also always have a guitar within reach, but I don't really consider that a gadget.
Well, I spose it'd be mah grand 'n' my old beat up iPod nano. That baby has been with me since '04, it's been to Iraq twice, an endless number of headphones and it still holds a great charge and keeps on tickin'. Phone would be a close third, but if I had to choose, I'd close music over connectivity (and no, my ....ty phone does not play music, or rather the battery life is so shi**y that if I play music with it it dies and becomes a paperweight).

I'm usually seen with my Reo in one hand, and an IPad mini I use to surf ECF in the other.
I tried to think of a gadget that was not computer related since I always have my HTC One with me and probably also a notebook or tablet. I'd say my other favorite is a super fast instant read thermometer by ThermoWorks call a Thermopen. Great for make sure I have the perfect medium rare, burger or steak.

I'm attached to my nook, laptop and iPhone...enough that I keep paying the phone bill even though I haven't had cell reception at my house for the past three years.

Considering how perpetually dehydrated I am now with the Reo, my Brita water bottle is never more than an arms length away. At my command station, the Grand guards the left of my laptop, while the Brita protects the right flank.
At home I switch to a insulated bottle for my cold water or tea. At work I only use my mug. Just wash and fill it with water or tea!

I have trouble defining 'gadget' so it's hard to accept your challenge.
I will present you with a logical conclusion I came to years ago about necessity and the mother of invention, however:
People always say the wheel was mankind's greatest invention. That fact seems to be unchallenged, and I'm absolutely baffled by anyone who would accept the idea. --> I think the pint glass was mankind's greatest invention. You can't drink Guinness from some stupid wheel.
