Rev, now that was a frightening story! I had a Springer Spaniel once. He was my first dog, after I got out of the USN. (he was one of my wedding presents) I loved him like a child. He wasn't hyper, but he had separation anxiety. We lived in a duplex, when I first got him. He was tormented by the little kids next door. He hated kids after that. Then a few months later we moved here. Two older tweener aged kids tormented my dog. I told them they better leave him alone, because if he ever gets out of that fence, he is gonna GET YOU. Well they didn't come back. A few years later, I had my first child. He was fine with her (but I never trusted him with her), up until she just turned one. Then she told him NO,
through the patio door. He tried to get her, through the glass door. So right after that, I put him up for adoption, in the newspaper. I miss that dog. But he was a termite dog. He was fine in the house with me. If I was gone too long though, he was a destructive dog. One time on a holiday, we were gone allll day. We got back that night. I thought we had been robbed. He destroyed the house. The dog had a stomach of iron too. He actually ate glass, and never had a problem. My ex used to mow the back yard, and have a cold beer afterwards. He would sometimes forget, and leave the bottle outside. The dog would put it between his paws, like a bone, and EAT IT. I have never seen anything like that before in my life. If you went to work, he was okay. But as I said, don't leave him alone too long. I worked shift work, and my husband worked day shift. Somebody was usually at home, most of the time. So, yes, I do know what you mean.
Aussies need a job. My dog has tried to herd me. I am not sure yet, if she knows her job is to protect me. (besides be my companion) Training is also a job. Her job is to learn. Right now she thinks her job is to release my son's dog from the pen outside. She works on it daily. She wants a playmate, so she is bound and determined to release him, from his "prison". He is only in there because he will jump out, climb out, dig out, of the yard. I can't let him play with her outside. He will teach her how to get out, and then it will be a never ending nightmare. That dog is old, but could easily get out. I had to even put a top on his pen. He stays inside when the weather is too hot, or too cold. He is in every night. He can jump from a sitting position, to right in your face, in one leap. He looks like small pit bull, but he doesn't have it. He is 1/2 Boston Terrier and 1/2 German Pincher. He is the ultimate varmit catcher.
