I decided to perform a minor overhaul on 3 of my 4 REOs. I've had 2 of them almost 1 year and the 3rd and 4th I recently purchased. I didn't perform any maintenance on the SL/LP Polished as it's my newest and firing just fine.
On the other 3 I decided to give them a nice bath and then apply DeoxIT G100L to firing pins and springs. The firing pins are so inexpensive and easy to change that the improvement in performance makes it well worth the 5 bucks each. The DeoxIT is not cheap although a little goes a long way and I can use it for other electronics and contacts in my household.
There is of course a noticeable improvement in performance with the new firing pins although the DeoxIT G100L has greatly reduced arching and is also contributing to the great improvement in vapor production and immediate ramp up on the coils. I am very happy I finally got around to doing this and it's a great way of keeping REOs running at their typical top-notch level of performance!
Here they are getting prepped for work and the supplies I used for this mini project!
I took them all apart and washed them with some PGA followed by a bath and scrub with some Dawn soap.
I then setup the new firing pins on some toothpicks and coated them with the DeoxIT G100L and let dry for a couple hours. I also coated the springs at this time.
I let them dry and re-assembled.
